RaverRafting: Hi, Katie! Tell us how you started out in music and what your journey has been like so far.
kM: Hi! So I’ve been singing since I can remember and I started writing songs in High School. Growing up, I always played in bands, sang in choirs and did pretty much anything music related I could find in Kansas City. When I was 18, I moved to Nashville and went to school at Belmont and that’s when I got really serious about things. Since then, I’ve put all of my energy into creating music and I’ve never been happier!
RR: What makes you passionate about music? What makes your heart skip?
kM: I think I’m so passionate about music because it has a universal ability to connect people. I want people to listen to my music and feel something – maybe they relate to the story, maybe it makes them smile, or reminds them of something or someone. I think people, for the most part, experience very similar emotions, and feelings and it’s important that we recognize that we are all more similar than different!
RR: How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?
kM: I would say that it’s fun, honest, and emotional. The music that I’m releasing this year is the most honest I’ve ever been in my art and it definitely feels like me.
RR: What genres are you planning on experimenting with?
kM: I have influences in all genres, but my heart is definitely in pop music. In these next few releases, I hope people catch wind of some hip-hop influence, some throwback vibes, and an overall cohesive sound from me!
RR: Can you tell us about your time at Belmont and how it’s impact your life?
kM: My time in the songwriting program at Belmont was one of the most formative times in my life. I really found myself and my voice through the help of mentors, my classmates, and a truly immersive curriculum. Honestly, I owe a LOT of my growth as a writer to that program!
RR: Who are some of your biggest influences?
kM: I have so many! Some of them growing up were Fleetwood Mac, Britney Spears, and Sheryl Crow, and Taylor Swift. Now, I’m really inspired by female pop icons like Ariana Grande, Charlie XCX, Bebe Rhexa, and so many more!
RR: Any plans for the future?
kM: Yes! “Heartless” is the first off of a project that I’m very excited about. I feel like I’m making music that’s really honest and true to me and I can’t wait for people to hear it!
