During this time of the reemergence of #MeToo and the Times Up movement being at the forefront of what is being considered a turning point for the entire world, gender equality is a subject that has been given a lot more of a priority.
Katy B will be performing with Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra, Francesca Lombardo and Holly Walker to celebrate 100 years of suffrage and women in music and arts on Tuesday, 6th March 2018. Proceeds will go to the UN Women’s HeForShe charity and will see Lauren Baker, Alicia MacDonald and L’Aubaine Visuals also perform.
Kate Simko has curated a powerful lineup that will showcase a number women and their voices in the fields of music and art. As part of HeForShe Arts Week and ‘Women and the Hall’, the event will celebrate how far women have come over the past 100 years and provide a platform for female artists who have a significant influence today.
The HeForShe mission statement says that the world is at a turning point and ‘people everywhere understand and support the ideas of gender equality. They know it’s not just a women’s issue, it’s a human rights issue. And when these powerful voices are heard, they will change the world. The time for that change is now.’
Kate Simko added that ‘one of the most exciting, and meaningful, aspects of being an artist is the ability to use your voice to influence culture and ultimately change perceptions, inspire, and shape the future. The evening is aimed at bringing together London-based talent from a spectrum of arts mediums to help UN Women’s admirable HeForShe cause’.
From the underground electronic scene rising to success on the UK charts, Katy B has collaborated with Jamie Jones, Kate Simko and LEO on “Dark Delirium” on her album Honey, which will be performed live at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time, where this event is to be held.
Honey featured an incredible group of electronic music’s top producers, weaving in grime through to house. Jamie Jones and Kate Simko’s collaboration features Jamie’s driving house sound alongside Kate’s signature London Electronic Orchestra harp and strings. Check out the track live in the Elgar Room on the 6th March.
Spin.com described the track as ‘climactic’ and ‘string-soaked’ which ‘calls out for a hero to save our heroine from a failed relationship, may be the highlight of the entire record.’
Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra are led by the Chicago born producer Simko. The Orchestra are one of London’s most unique and innovative ensembles and Kate creates a distinct sound that combines the intricacies and textures of classical instruments with electronic music.
Francesca Lombardo, an Italian born DJ and classically-trained musician, will be also be debuting a new piece off her upcoming electronic-strings pop album, with a special acoustic piano performance.
Holly Walker, a London-based singer who has impressed on a global scale with her collaboration with Maribou State will be providing a sneak preview of some of her new solo material also coming out this year.
Lauren Baker, who has showcased her art at the Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert Museum has also been commissioned by high profile clients like Harrods and London Design Festival. ‘She considers her higher purpose to be to find inner strength and inspire others, vitally channeling female empowerment through her work.’
L’Aubaine Visuals Laurie Bender’s work is self-produced as she combines the analogue and digital, hand-drawn animations, photography and film, while Alicia Macdonald will be be showcasing her work after being part funded by Film London and starred Lesley Manville. Alicia directed a powerful short for the UN Women ‘Draw A Line’ campaign. Watch it here.
‘Women and the Hall celebrates the women who formed the Royal Albert Hall’s history and were instrumental in the fight for women’s suffrage, and provides a platform for the women who are shaping our future. On almost thirty different occasions between 1908 and 1913, the Hall found itself at the front line of the women’s struggle, hired by several different militant and pacifist suffrage groups.’
