December is the month to celebrate holidays across the world, whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day or anything else in between. It can be hard to pull things back into focus when we’re concentrating on finals in school, getting home to our loved ones, and making sure we get the perfect gifts for friends and family. However, one thing that we always find that helps ease us through is music. One release that has dropped this holiday season is from Toronto-based Kitsuna. “Don’t Forget” is a beautiful mix of R&B and electronica, a combination the artist has coined to be “deepnight.”
“Don’t Forget” starts off with bright piano chords and dancing pops of melody before smoothing us into a grooving rhythm. The vocals are intoxicating, “falling, falling, falling” through the notes with gentle, yet controlled inflection. The drums and guitar bring on another wave of musicianship that we can’t help but crave more of. Kitsuna skillfully layers all these elements together that create an enticing, unique track that we have found ourselves returning to between all the classic holiday jingles. While the track has us transfixed, the theme of the song is of bittersweet reminiscence, and the artist’s vision of “deepnight” is the exploration of inner darkness and solitude.
With that being said, this track has us wanting to grab our lover and just be together in the moment, to hold on to what we have and not let it slip away. We hope Kitsuna’s “Don’t Forget” has you wanting to spend those special moments with your loved ones this December. The single is just a hint of what’s to come in 2019 for the artist, with a full length album to drop early next year.
