Johnny and Mark, the gentlemen who make up Klaypex were kind enough to lend us some of their time and answer a few questions about their past, present, and future. Not only is their music amazing but they’re apparently really cool dudes. Check out our review on their banging EP Loose Dirt if you haven’t already and keep an eye out for them, because they are going to be huge soon!
1. When did you guys start producing? Was it a collaborative process from the very beginning or did you decide to team up later on?
Well, we started producing when we wanted to start recording ideas from our first act, which was focused on Rock. It was a collaborative process from the very beginning when we started back in 2008.
2. Did either of you play any instruments growing up? If so, do you think it influences your creative process when you work on your records nowadays?
Johnny started playing around on piano from a very young age. He didn’t have any training, but the interaction with the instrument itself really helped him develop his musical abilities and creative output later on. He then began playing guitar at the age of 16. Mark began playing bass at age 17, but learned to play at a very quick pace! Mark also went through an Independent Music Production program later on. Playing these instruments and going through the Rock Band phase really helped us expand our creative horizons.
3. Where do you find most of your inspiration when you produce?
We find inspiration in literally everything. As long as we’re in a good, upbeat mood, ideas tend to flow through quickly. Sometimes when we’re down and in a rut, though, we need to take a step back and let ourselves live a little to bring back those good vibes.
4. We all got really excited when you said you’ll be touring soon… when do you think that might be and who would be your ideal artist/group to go on tour with?
Well, we hope to start sometime at the very beginning of 2012. Until then, we have a DJ touring our sets. We’re still a pretty young band, but we’re growing fast and there’s a lot of stuff that we still need to take care of before we can begin rehearsing for live shows. We’d love to go on tour with Deadmau5, but we can only dream =p
5. Can you tell me about your favorite show that you’ve played thus far? What made it the most memorable?
We’ve only played one show with our old rock act back in our 2008 prom. What made it most memorable was the disaster drummer who overtook the whole mix and completely went overboard with his crazy super fast double bass, not at all like we rehearsed!
6. What about the most memorable show that you’ve been to? Who was playing and what made it so special?
We went to see a Muse concert, I think it was during March 2010. Muse was our favorite band at the time, and have been for a long time at that point! Before the show, we went to see a local radio interview that they were doing. When they finished, and we left, we realized we parked directly behind them (in an illegal spot mind you, as we were way too excited!) We immediately got in the car and followed them onto the main road, and then switched to the lane next to them and pulled up towards them. We started blasting their music in our car going crazy, and then they pulled their fully tinted windows down and greeted us while a camera guy videotaped the whole thing! It was a pretty awesome moment. It got a little embarrassing later, but that’s a story for another time =p
7. How do you feel about the dubstep and EDM scene in general evolving right now?
We love it! A big reason why we started doing this is because of the direction EDM is heading towards right now. Dubstep is living proof of that, and we couldn’t be happier with the direction it’s headed towards right now.
8. Who in the EDM scene excites you the most right now and why?
Definitely Deadmau5. His productions, melodies, and rhythms help build an atmosphere that we both agree is a new standard in EDM. We can’t wait to see where he takes it next!
