“Koan”, formally defined as a paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment, is a fitting name for this U.K. duo.
Distorted basslines, melodic, fluid rhythms, smooth ambient sounds, and a bit of Japanese string plucking warp together to form KOAN Sound‘s latest EP, Dynasty. The incredible four track album, released on Skrillex’s OWSLA label, is a combination of their classic dubstep sounds and funky jazz, signaling their development as producers but ability to remain true to their unique sound despite their exploration into different genres.
An interesting ornamentation to the title track, the Eastern culture string plucks you hear work well with the bass heavy groove. “We have an interest in Eastern culture – Japanese culture specifically,” the duo made of Will Weeks and Jim Bastow told Rolling Stone. They say growing up with video games and anime has a lot to do with this. You’ll hear some serious electro-funk and jazz components in the last two tracks.
While the album, specifically the last two tracks, may not seem fit for the dance floor, Weeks and Bastow said “we jump all over the place in terms of genres and BPMs when we play out.” My personal favorite track is “Infinite Funk”, which is exactly what the title says. In Japanese, ‘koan’ literally translates to ‘matter for public thought.’
