Krewella achieved massive success and popularity in 2013. With success comes heightened criticism and scrutiny, and the Krewella crew are no strangers to disapproval. Despite the naysayers, Krewella members Jahan, Yasmine, and Rain Man have all contributed to respectful social causes in 2013 (notably their video of the Headhunterz collaboration “United Kids of the World” which advocated bullying victims).
To bring in the new year, Krewella brought kidnapping victim Michelle Knight on stage during their performance of their song “Enjoy the Ride” for their “Cleveland Rocks” NYE concert. Knight, a victim of Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro, enjoyed her first new year’s eve celebration since being held captive for 11 years. Even with the onslaught of a blizzard, Knight and Krewella join together in a very heartwarming display of humanity and hope. Even though Knight will never be able to reclaim the lost 11 years of her life, celebrating with one of the most renown EDM act’s concerts (hosted by Drew Carey to boot) proved to be an exceptional way to begin 2014. Honoring Knight evokes the deeper meaning beyond electronic music: peace, love, unity, and respect. Krewella may not appeal to every listener but it is clear they value the meaning of PLUR and convey it through their actions. Whether it be giving a kidnapping survivor an esteemed welcome or helping a stranger at a festival, we can all strive to follow PLUR in the new year.
