It is very difficult to stay on top in the dance music world nowadays with the scene constantly changing and new talent emerging everyday, but for Laidback Luke this has not been a problem for the last 15 years. The electronic dance music world changes constantly because of the the fans constant demand for more, people are always looking for what’s next. Laidback Luke has been able to cater to the masses by keeping an open mind to what’s new in the scene and having constant determination to work hard to please his fans. And today the Mixmash Records Boss has released Focus, his first album in 10 years.
For years Luke has been captivating audiences with his out of this world DJ skills and singles that get everyone rocking no matter what artist plays them. But in this past two years the concept of album-making has become popular. To some this gives dance music more credibility and allows artists to create tracks that they may not normally play in their typical DJ set. But keeping to his own drive to be relevant and different, this album delivers a bulk of new fresh dance floor anthems.
The album kicks off with “Let It Go” a collaboration with the talented Trevor Guthrie. This track has the potential to be one of those classic feel good anthems with a fantastic melody and powerful lyrics. Laidback Luke has teamed up with some amazing vocal talent on this album to produce tracks that are not only great but give us a powerful message as well.
Another track on the album that Laidback Luke has been teasing fans with all year is “Tell Me That You Love Me.” This song gives us incredible meaningful lyrics that people can relate to on many different levels. Listening to this song really tackles your emotions and can bring strong feelings out of anyone.
In the past year the future house/bass sound has been taking the dance world by storm, almost every artist is incorporating this style into their sets. Coming from a heavy house background, tackling this sound his own creative flair was no problem for everyone’s favorite superhero DJ. Tracks like “The Rut” and “We Party” capture that heavy bass sound that can get any dance music fan rocking uncontrollably on the dance floor. Another prime example is a collaboration with GTA entitled “The Chase.”
Besides all the amazing dance floor tunes, Laidback Luke also has taken the opportunity to showcase that he can also create songs out of his element. “Won’t Break This Feeling Down” which is a collaboration with Luciano Martina, highlights Luke’s ability to work with slower tempos. Normally we expect heavy four to floor anthems, but in this track we catch a slower groovier track that embodies an almost Daft Punk style.
Keeping with the idea of going out of his element, we get the track “Don’t Hesitate.” This may be the most surprising track on the album for most fans because of its mellow tempo. Luke masterfully incorporates acoustic elements with a bone-chilling trap beat. This track gives off an old school R&B style with a new school electronic feel.
Overall, this is a must have album! Laidback Luke shows why he is one dance music’s top acts of all time. We get everything from house to future and even a little techno. If your looking for an album with diversity make sure to get a copy of Focus. Laidback Luke has had one of best and longest careers in dance music and his determination to push himself and please his fans unparalleled.
