Have you ever wondered what life is like on the other side of the decks? How it feels to be the maestro instead of the audience? What you would do if one day you became one of the most successful DJs in the world? In this 27 minute documentary, Jagermeister explores life of Lucas Cornelis van Scheppingen, or “Laidback Luke” as we know him onstage, in a genuine and personal way never before seen.
Watching this video was enlightening on inumerable levels but what struck me the hardest was Luke’s devotion to building a holistic and tangible happiness despite living a life of what most would consider pure ecstasy. As most of us know, it’s easy to get lost in the haze of smoke and lasers but as Luke tries to point out to us, the lives we live within the confines of our favorite club or festival is not reality but the escape. He continuously reminds us to maintain focus on the elements of life that bring true joy throughout the film, which I found incredibly humbling.
He also takes a very straightforward approach to addressing the hardships and even failures he experienced as an up and coming DJ, openly discussing his abuse of alcohol in his younger years as well as the insecurities he felt growing up in a family full of talented musicians.
It was interesting to hear how poorly his predecesors treated him when he was new to the scene and how instead of following that laiden path, he vowed that he would embrace new artists wholeheartedly. This attitude has now developed into the foundation for his recent expansion of Mixmash Records titled “Ones To Watch” – a record label completely devoted to nurturing up and coming talent.
Overall, I have a newfound respect for this man not only as a DJ but also a person. His ability to maintain a sense of humilty after years of unparalleled success and outstanding wealth is a testament to his character as well as an example from which we could all learn. Not to mention the fact that he could probably kick my ass in kung fu. I implore you to watch this documentary as it has given me a completely new perspective on one of my favorite DJs and also the endless pursuit of happiness we all endure.
