As the trend of live instrumentation grows in the EDM community, the stigma of “pressing play” consequently flourishes, with the electronic music fanbase taking a definitive stance against indolence on stage. Many DJs are stepping up their game in the face of this widespread opposition by evolving their sound and live performances. While each producer has their own take on what constitutes a honorable set, Australian producer Nick Boundy, known by his stage moniker M4SONIC, has forsaken looped samples and taken on the Novation LaunchPad as his instrument of choice.
Many may remember the Novation LaunchPad as the preferred instrument of famed French producer Madeon, who used the tool to spontaneously create songs during his live sets. M4SONIC also uses the LaunchPad to produce music on the fly, however, unlike Madeon, if M4SONIC isn’t touching the pad, absolutely no sound is emitted. His latest music video for track “Chaos” demonstrates the careful dexterity and vigilance necessary to operate such a machine, proving that what he does on stage is no easy task.
The connection between music production and the live performance aspect of electronic music is really important to me. I feel that in the world of EDM we are accustomed to a standardized performance on CDJ’s. But artists like Disclosure, The Glitch Mob, Above & Beyond and Zedd are incorporating live instrumental elements to their shows and I think that this is the ‘right’ direction for Electronic Music. – Nick Boundy
M4SONIC’s first attempt at original production comes in the form of his recent EP, entitled M4.
