Adventure Club released their first full length album just over two weeks ago. The album Red//Blue has 12 songs that range from banger to something a little more chill. RaverRafting got the chance to ask the guys some questions about the album, and how through their career they got to this point.
RR – Red//Blue is your first full length album. What made you decide it was time for an album?
Leighton – We have been wanting to release this album for years now. Unfortunately, while we were working on the album every time we would make a song, we would release it. That plays in part with the fact that it takes so long to write a song, and I guess we have been impatient with holding music. So ultimately the album has been a long time coming. I think what really triggered our ability to sit on music, was us building a studio in Christians basement. We built this this thing at the beginning of the year, which played hand in hand with us being completely sober. I guess we just started the work grind as of January we completed all the songs and music. We are super happy with the final product, and I think that is the kind of train that we had with the album.
RR- So the theme is supposed to be about your versatility as artists, and how you can go from a banger to a chill melodic feel. What was the influence behind this theme?
Leighton – As much as we wanted to show our versatility we also wanted to display different sides we have. A lot of the time at our live show, we kind of go from super heavy banging raging music to the very emotionally driven vocal dub-step or melodic music. So I think on the album we wanted to have that dichotomy present. We wanted an album you can listen to while raging or pre-gaming and also something you can listen to before going to bed as well. I think the album enabled us to do that. With twelve songs there is more flexibility to be versatile, and go in and out of the heavy songs and light songs. Compared to writing an EP with four songs where you don’t have that much time to display what you are trying to do. You get less of an outlet to tell a story.
RR-Do you find that either one of you encompasses the red side or the blue side more?
Leighton– If anything I think I am bit more red, and Christian would be blue but those aren’t extremes. Like we will have varying days but I think all in all I think it encompasses both of us together.
RR- Is their a consensus on favorite track of the album?
Leighton – Christian, on the red side, he loves Firestorm. I think we both, on the blue, have a very very big attachment to the song Forever. Forever is a song that was actually written years ago. I want to say maybe 7 years ago while we were and Indie/Emo band. We kind of reached in grabbed the vocals, and did all the instrumentation. Christian wrote all the lyrics to that song, he has a bit more of an affinity in how that song speaks to both of us. Firestorm, Forever, Without You, and Ghosts are our stand out tracks.
RR- If you can see your fans take away anything from an Adventure Club show, what would it be?
Christian– I think we have always been ones to not give a flat specific experience. You know how you go to see this artist, and you know that they are just going to be a hard-style artist or this artist is going to be a house guy? We kind of have this dynamic at shows where we get people, and we hit them in an emotional place, but then we hit them at a rage party place. I think a good take home for me would be someone who is coming to our show to get a good emotional experience, and actually comes out of it thinking,” Woah that was a lot of of fun too.” The opposite situation where someone is going to party an comes out of it having experienced something deep as well.
RR-Do you have a favorite remix that someone has done of one of your tracks?
Leighton – We know of a crazy emotional dub-step remix of Firestorm that is coming out. Very systematic and feeling driven its not out yet but it will be at the top of our remix list. The artist really brought Firestorm back to the old school dub-step area that we are very partial to.
Christian – The Chainsmokers remix of Wonder definitely has to be at the top of the list as well.
RR- Have you had any defining moments through the career of Adventure Club? The “I made it moment!”
Christian– For us at the beginning of Adventure Club we sat down with our manager, and we made a checklist/mile stones of things we wanted to accomplish. Every time we checked something off the list we had an, “I made it moment!” Every time you do something that is a bit greater than that the goal post kind of changes. So as soon as we checked off the first item on our list we had a big “I made it moment.”
The first item was playing our first show out of Canada in Atlanta. The tell all be all moment was when we play Coachella and we had the whole Sahara tent singing along to Crave You.
RR- So with the Red//Blue theme. Do you think you will keep the theme through later albums?
Christian – I doubt we will really change the Red//Blue thing, that’s deeply seeded in our branding so we might just stick with it altogether. I definitely know, I would like to keep exploring things in more than one direction. I think that’s always been the most exciting part of the EDM scene for me. You aren’t restricted to one instrument. I am not a guitarist and a vocalist and I don’t have to work just within those constraints. We have basically the entire world, it literally is that your imagination is the only thing that can limit you. It would be pretty sad to just stick to one specific very dedicated sound. In my opinion it just wouldn’t be as fun to explore.
RR- Alright guys one final question. If you could look into the future of Adventure Club what would you hope to see?
Christian-I think our fans are maturing along side us. We started adventure club when we basically were pretty early on in the dance scene ourselves. So we have been going through the same phases that our fans kind of are. We have been getting older, and more mature. I definitely think our music has been maturing a little bit. As far as the future goes I think that we will go that direction a little bit more. Obviously, that doesn’t go to say we don’t like partying or having fun. We aren’t completely abandoning a nice solid banger, but just a little more discretion a little more tastefulness as we move forward.
We really appreciate Adventure Club taking the time to answer some questions with us. You should definitely check out the new album if you have not had the chance. Red//Blue is available for digital download everywhere. Also make sure you check out the new RaverRafting gear. It makes the perfect holiday presents.
