French electronic newcomer Leon Inc. is set to grace the stage at London venue Electric Brixton this Saturday 11th March. The show, organised by The Playground, welcomes Vitalic, Mamiko Motto and Com Truise, an artist Leon Inc. is heavily inspired by.
‘Microfibre’ is the first track to be lifted from Leon Inc.’s upcoming 11-track album called Insert Disc, expected to be released this year via Leon Records. This five minute track moves in a different direction to what we are used to from Leon Inc. but ‘Microfibre”s groovy rhythm and melodic synths are set to enthral electronic fans everywhere.
Insert Disc will be released as an audio-visual piece, bringing together the Leon Resort microsite, so expect exciting three-dimensional animations that will perfectly align with the album’s scintillating tracks.
We spoke to Leon Inc. about his Saturday show, his background in music and a few of his likes and dislikes.
What’s your background and inspiration for your music?
I don’t think I have a “basic background”. No one taught me first and I even tried out a course for a year, but it was not for me. I watched musicians I liked at the time, learned about rhythm and melody and then I finally got passionate about production around the age of 13 or 14. I decided to take it to the next level a year later when I met my friend and collaborator JR827 and that was the best period of my learning process.
It also reminded me of how important it is, even for a producer, to pick up an instrument. Try everything and you’ll know what you really want to do. You don’t have to be a master (those who are will find you if you’re a good producer anyway), but it will give you an undeniable advantage and you’ll realize how much better your music is becoming.
What’s the reason behind releasing an album in 2017? How does your music fit into the electronic music of today?
When I started Leon Inc., I decided to release only full-length albums. It requires a lot of energy and concentration, so I thought it would be good if I could do it. The focus isn’t to ensure that my music fits into “electronic music of today”. I do my best to make sure that I make music I can still listen to it in 20 years, and not following any trends is part of this.
What is your favourite track on the new album and is definitely one to look out for?
‘Microfibre’ is certainly the track which I am most proud of and that represents another transition in the change of my vision of music, particularly since it is one of the last tracks that I produced at the time of finishing the album; this track lies in the middle of this transition.
What do you prefer: playing an intimate show or a festival?
Some intimate shows can be good, some festivals can be bad. I can’t really compare, these are two different atmospheres that I enjoy for what they are and I feel the need to alternate between the two.
What are your plans for the next year? Can we expect to see you playing in London again?
My aim is to have made enough progress on my next project by then, and I will certainly play some IDs on Saturday. Finally, I would obviously love to play in London again, the city has an incredible history and is in love with music.
