The City of Sin was extra alive this weekend as young twenty-somethings were on a mission to make their first regrettable decisions of 2014. Everywhere you went, from casinos to nightclubs, the energy was non-stop. People were thriving off the anticipation of what 2014 will bring for them, and were determined to bring the year in right. Me being a young man in the prime of my life, I found myself with the same depraved urge to finish out the first week of the New Year with no memory of it whatsoever. This craving led me to Mandalay Bay this weekend, where I caught Hook N’ Sling destroy the dance floor on Light Night Club’s last night of their Lift Off New Years Week.
Now, to anyone unaware of the reputation of Light Nightclub, this club is quickly becoming the face of Las Vegas’ electronic music scene. Not only does it frequently feature resident DJ’s such as Skrillex, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Zedd, but it also features Cirque Du Soliel performers and a mind-blowing LED light show. It was also voted America’s best night club at the 2013 Elektro Awards. Going into Saturday night I did not know much more than this, and only found out more details by reviewing their Instagram, which tantalized me wildly with the promise of the best night of my life. So, with this promise in mind I began my pre-game at a surprise engagement dinner for a cousin who lives in Vegas. As the alcohol flowed and the food depleted, I soon realized that time was of the essence. On a jovial note I left the Cosmopolitan hotel (home of another famed Vegas nightclub, the Marquee) and made the two-mile walk back to my hotel, fully aware that I had about thirty minutes to get back so that I could start getting ready while my friends had their own pre-game.
…Two hours later I was down fifty bucks at the slot machines when I received a rather disgruntled call from my friends who were waiting in the hotel room. I sustained the irate phone call and ran to my hotel room as fast as I could, which truthfully was not all that fast considering I was drunk and lost in Vegas. The spirit, however, was still fully alive in my endeavors, and I kept this in mind until we finally made it to a cab around 11:00. You could feel the city’s pulse as we drove to the Mandalay Bay. That same spirit alive in me was alive in everyone in that city, and it was fighting rampantly to take over the night. Lights and people were abound, and the energy could not have been better walking into the Mandalay Bay. We made our way through the crowds of clueless tourists, varying agendas wandering superfluously through the extravagant hotel. The haze of excess dazzled me…we were in the Mecca of human decadence, an idyllic tribute to the power of human greed. A true American cornerstone.
I remember thinking all of this before finding my way to the entrance of Light Nightclub. We entered the club around midnight, at the highlight of this closing spectacle. At this point I stopped thinking and began to feel so vividly the electricity that had been mounting in me since I had confirmed this trip. Hook N’ Sling spun a wonderful set of Deep and Big Room House as lasers flung back and forth in a dizzying array of patterns which synchronized with the behemoth imagery flashing on the LED screens. This sense of bewilderment was intensified by the presence of Cirque Du Soliel performers flying across the sky.
Walking into Light Nightclub one feels overcome in a manner unlike any other night club I have ever been to. Not only were the music and theatrics great, but the atmosphere screamed PLUR, which is a rare occurrence in a Vegas nightclub. The people were amazing, and you really felt a sense of oneness with the crowd. Everyone was there, everyone was glorious, and all were united with the same goal of having the best night of their lives. And Hook N’ Sling seemed determined to give that night, too. His set was mostly packed with his signature high energy Electro. Among my favorites he played were his remix of Krewella’s “Live for the Night,” as well as his original track with Nervo, titled “Reason”. His mix conducted the crowd as we all became swept up in the magic that was Light Nightclub.
As we finally made it home just before four in the morning, I remember thinking that very few things in life can compare to a night like this. Great friends, great music, and an unforgettable night. For this, I thank you Light Nightclub, and hope you continue your successful journey to becoming one of the best nightclubs in Vegas.
