Maybe you’ve heard of Fitbit or the NikeFuel band, but have you heard for Lightwave? Lightwave is a new tech startup that has developed software and a wristband for concert-goers, and its aim is to provide analytics for live events and for artists.
By tracking biometric data including temperature, movement, and audio levels the wristband provides artists with real-time data of how the audience is feeling and responding to their epic (or many not so epic) sets. The creator, Rana June, who became famous when she became an iPad DJ a few years back, has spent several years developing this project.
The goal is ultimately to replace those paper wristbands with Lightwave bands. Speaking to TechCrunch, she said: “When you enter a concert, instead of putting a paper wristband on someone, you put an intelligent wristband on them.” In an interview with The Daily Dot, she also added: “We allow artists and creators to pull the data from the wristbands to drive interactive experiences, unlock key moments, and change the environment dynamically.”
The technology made its debut at A-Trak’s SXSW performance which was also hosted by Pepsi. Users treated the event as they did other SXSW performances, dancing, taking photos – until the Top 10 Active Users Visualization was shown on screen. “Once the leaderboard came up on the screen and people realized that they were actually part of the show, they put their phones away and danced like crazy! That’s what we like to see. We believe that live events should be engrossing, and if you’re looking at your phone, you’re taken out of the experience. The simple element of competition and scoring points was really effective and, most importantly, fun,” June told The Daily Dot.
The Lightwave still has some development to go through and it hasn’t been released when it will be used again, but we’ll keep you updated and will follow how this technology develops! Check out a video for Lightwave below, and let us know what you think in the comments!
