Starting the Powerful Picks series was one of the best choices I’ve ever made, the support from readers, artist, and labels has been enormous, the memories made through the experience will never be forgotten and will continue to be created! Genuinely caring and supporting innovative music is something we are all passionate about at WRR, which makes us super happy to see that others are digging it. To celebrate, we are bringing you an exclusive mix and interview from HypeM-chart-topping duo Lost Kings, but first..
Where did these guys comes from?!
With their first tracks only reaching back to this past April, the new LA-based duo Lost Kings are suddenly the hottest act happening in progressive music. Their ability to reinvent the moods, themes, and sounds that are typical in progressive with fresh instrumentation and simple, yet creative twists is unlike anything world has seen before.
Don’t take my word for it, check out the charts. Lost Kings soared to #1 on HypeM and Boomrat with their moving release “Hayley Kiyoko – This Side Of Paradise (Lost Kings Remix,)” hitting over 1.4K likes on the song alone. It’s not wonder the single topped the list, “This Side Of Paradise (Lost Kings Remix,)” features a well-synced blend of dreamy background effects and vocals (that are a norm on HypeM) with well-placed piano rhythms, segwaying smoothy to an alarmingly powerful drop.
So how did these two go from getting a lucky 20K plays on their first release in April to today collecting over 1 million plays on Soundcloud?
It started with a good upbringing. With both Robert Gainley and Dr. No growing up around music in the family, the two always focused on the arts as a childhood hobby. Piano lessons and school plays soon turned into commitment to instruments and college music classes. Robert and Dr. No were linked together by a mutual friend, the two thought they would simply show one another a few tricks, but end up choosing the “fuck it let’s go big” route instead – producing their first remix together.
The track was a remix of Borgeous’s “Invincible.”
Shocked by the rapid response of blogs and listeners, Robert and Dr. No knew it was meant to be, they made a pact as Lost Kings and focused on production and DJing heavily. Since “Invincible (Lost Kings Remix,)” each release has swelled, shadowing the last.
Lost Kings would drop their biggest hit to date only three months later, a remix of Disclosure’s “Latch,” it’s more than a moving progressive anthem that touches the heart, it’s a pivotal moment that captures Lost Kings finding their sound and spreading their wings – showing off their true capability. From here, Robert and Dr. No go on to remix the likes of Wild Cub, Foster The People, Local Natives, Dirty South and more, all of which intensify prog. house’s ability to take the listener on a dramatic journey and highlight each song’s story through premium quality production work.
Another significant high point and my personal favorite release is “Gecko (Lost Kings Remix.)” After clicking play, you’re essentially showered with a huge variety of echo-y, delayed effects that not only compliment the vibes of the Oliver Heldens original, but transform it into a totally new, inspiring musical life form.
So now, all that waits for Robert and Dr. No is a very bright future. Obviously we are excited about Lost Kings breathing new life into progressive house music. With that said, I’m proud to say that Lost Kings and WRR have partnered up to deliver a one-of-a-king exclusive mix direct from the duo themselves. The set blends everything from touching modern-day house to some of their biggest hits, all rolled into one smooth, melodic experiences – even including an ID for the finale!
Unable to restrain ourselves futher, WRR and Lost Kings linked up for an interview, touching on their sound, style, and mad love of Chad Kroeger of Nickleback.
Progressive house has been around for while and there’s tons of artists that produce it, how were you able to make Lost Kings stand out?
LK: I think a lot has to do with song selection. There are so many songs that people just remix and remix and remix so even the best remixes of that song kind of get overlooked. We really try to limit ourselves from that and do different tracks. We also play everything in, this really helps create more energy and feeling and can really transfer to whosever listening.
You’ve gotten nearly a million plays on LK’s SoundCloud solely in the last 4 months, how does that feel?
LK: Its surreal honestly, hitting that million mark in such a short amount of time really blew our minds, it kind of made us take a step back and be like woah. We always thought that this would take off quickly but not this quick. So yea, we were pretty pumped to hit 1 million but in the scheme of things we have so much more work to do. 1 million is cool but you know whats cooler 1 billion – Justin Timberlake playing the guy from Napster.
What made you want to start the Lost Kings project, what niche(s) do you currently see yourself filling within EDM at the moment?
LK: We had been doing a lot of stuff by ourselves and had achieved some decent milestones but never really got where we wanted to go. We met and immediately hit it off, started working one day and then hit the ground running. As far as niches that we fill, I think we do a good job at filling the feeeeels niche and that we can appeal to more than just an EDM crowd.
What genre’s could you see Lost Kings producing more of in the future?
LK: We love all types of music and have backgrounds in various types. We are both really into Nickleback so I could see us making a lot of music like them, just looking for our Chad Kroeger.
What type of energy/emotion do you typically aim for when you produce? In other words, what would you consider your “style?”
LK: Our style, I would say, is alive. We like to do leads and other sounds that we could play live because some stuff can feel so robotic, we love the feeling that we create in our tracks and think it would be great to implement instruments in our shows. We are all about making people feel good, and we try to do that with our music.
Any collaborations in the works?
LK: Not as of now, we have some great producer friends that we would definitely like to work with at some point but nothing in the works as of now. But like I said, we would jump at the chance to collab with king kroeger.
