It’s rare for an artist to amass a packed house at a music festival within the first few hours of day one. And yet, last Friday afternoon, shortly after the gates officially opened to Electric Zoo’s 10-year anniversary edition, a rising Canadian duo proved to do just that. A sea of colorful bodies could be seen grooving to the infectious sounds of the Main stage, orchestrated by two guys behind the decks with riveting smiles and energy. It was Loud Luxury commanding the crowd for their first performance on Randall’s Island, and what might have been one of the best debuts we’ve seen at the Zoo.
Andrew Fedyk and Joe Depace are the talents behind the fresh faced duo Loud Luxury. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know their chart-topping hit “Body,” which has garnered over 215 million streams on Spotify and recently won the duo a MMVA for “Best Song of the Summer.” With no signs of stopping, the LA-based artists dropped their highly anticipated follow-up track “Love No More” featuring Anders, just hours before making their debut at Electric Zoo in New York City. We had the chance to catch up with Loud Luxury after their killer set to talk about their new single, future collabs, the festival and more.
RR: You just made your debut at Electric Zoo festival on the Main stage. How are you feeling right now?
Andrew: It’s crazy for us. After we finished university and started making music professionally, we’d be in our apartment or the studio watching the Electric Zoo live stream this time every year, and would say to each other, man it would be so sick to be up there on the main stage. So to be a part of it this year is just beyond incredible.
RR: A few hours before your set you released your new track “Love No More.” Can you tell us about how you linked up with Anders and the strides you went through to create the single?
Joe: I’m an avid Spotify user and am always searching for different artists. I was digging around one day and happened to come across Anders, and just loved his sound. Immediately, I called up Andrew and was like we have to do something with this guy right away. We’ve been fans ever since.
Andrew: It turned out we had tons of mutual friends in Toronto and were able to get linked up by a couple of buddies. When we got into the studio together, Anders was already working on a slower version of the song. So we played around with our own take on it and restructured the sound. We think it picks up really well where “Body” left off, and really hope people love it because we do.
RR: You guys catapulted onto the scene and made your mark with “Body.” How was the experience of producing “Love No More” different to the making of your first hit?
Joe: “Body” came about very organically. We weren’t entirely sure what it was going to become when we first began playing around with different versions of the track, we were really just focused on trying to find our sound. Once we figured out its core element, we knew there was something special.
Andrew: With “Love No More”, there was definitely more pressure. We wanted to show that “Body” wasn’t a fluke, it wasn’t us getting lucky. We wanted this next release to build on what we’ve created, but be its own unique chapter, and I think we had to be a bit more mindful of that through the production process.
RR: Another massive moment you recently had was that you won a Much Music Video Award for “Best Song of the Summer.” As Canadians, what did it mean to you guys to not only perform at the show, but also win this award?
Joe: I used to watch the award show every year in my underwear at home and think about what it might be like just to be in the audience. So, to not only be invited, but actually perform and win an award was absolutely crazy.
Andrew: The entire opportunity was just so surreal.
RR: Now, let’s bring it back to the festival for a minute. You guys have been playing on the circuit for some time now. Do you have any pre-set rituals to kick the nerves or get excited?
Joe: We usually take a shot of tequila. Today we didn’t have tequila so what I did was make a nice medley of juices and we did what I like to call a ginger wellness shot.
Andrew: This shot was actually healthy for once, which was different, but still served the same purpose for our ritual.
RR: You’ve remixed songs for a number of DJs and producers who are playing Electric Zoo this year. Are there any other producers playing this weekend that you’d like to collab with in the future?
Joe: We’d love to work with Martin Garrix or Virtual Self.
Andrew: Yeah, and for more of a club track, it would be awesome to work with someone from the Night Bass label.
Thanks, guys!
