Last summer, RaverRafting got the opportunity to chat with the two Dutch DJ’s and producers Lucas de Wert and Steven Jansen, when they were in the middle of their wild summer tour. They were performing that night at the European Festival ‘Sziget’ at the Telekom Arena stage and their newest hit ‘Calinda’ was about to be released. They know each other from their home town village ‘Maastricht’ inside the Netherlands and now, they travel around the world to show their music to a large crowd as Lucas & Steve.
A few months have passed and we had the pleasure to talk to the two again. They have been releasing many tracks on Spinnin’ Records since, such as ‘Eagle Eyes’, together with Lost Frequencies and Felix Jaehn and a few weeks ago, they released their fresh single ‘Love Is My Game’, together with Dr. Kucho! and Gregor Salto. They have much more music in store and told us about their summer tour experiences and other plans for the future. Check out their newest single and the exclusive interview in this article.
It’s been a while since I spoke to you guys at the European festival ‘Sziget’. Have you been developing much?
We’ve been producing a lot in the studio since we finished our summer tour, new music, innovative sounds and something really different from the music we’ve produced up ‘till now. You won’t immediately hear that it’s produced by us, which makes it fun. We thought it was refreshing.
We gained so much inspiration from the traveling this summer and it’s cool that we could bring that inspiration into something different in the studio. It’s not totally different, we’re still Lucas & Steve, but instead of turning left we decided to turn right once. We’re very curious how the crowd is going to respond to all of it. There are a lot of events planned, so we’re excited!
Your summer tour was a pretty good one, wasn’t it?
Yes, we’ve had a really good summer tour! We lost a lot of energy to it by the lack of sleep during all those weeks, but luckily we could turn this into studio work, which filled our bodies with energy again. When we were back in the studio, our normal lives returned and we were producing tunes all day long. J That was really good for us, because we didn’t have time to do that during the whole summer. During the rest of the year, it’s mostly performing during the weekends and during the week, you have time to work on your music. During the summer tour, it was all about traveling, performing and jet lags, which offers you less studio time, but great experiences.
Last time I spoke to you guys, you were going to release the track ‘Calinda’. This one did pretty well, right?
Yes, it did really good. It was in the top 10 for almost three weeks and it also did a really good job on the radio. It was very popular in the Netherlands and we hope even more countries will follow. We’re still excited about that one and we were very satisfied with the results. Although, it wasn’t a break-through track, it really had to do good, so it’s great that it exceeds expectations.
What was the best part of the tour this summer?
The interview with RaverRafting. J Just kidding, but we definitely thought Sziget was really awesome! Back then, we already mentioned the festival in France we also went to, Electro Beach. That was really great as well. The big festivals were cool, but we also thought Ushuaia with Avicci was amazing. It wasn’t the biggest performance we did, it doesn’t always have to be big, but the vibe over there was just so good. It was our last show at Ibiza this year. Avicci invited us and performing with him in Ushuaia was a great honor. The set was great, we were opening an opening act and Ushuaia is just one of best clubs in the world.
If you start a performance in Ushuaia, even if nobody is in the crowd, you’re still performing in Ushuaia. It doesn’t matter if it’s an empty Ushuaia. When we started, the place was quite calm, but it got crowded really quick! We build it up and after that, the place was totally full of people. The weather was great, it was crowded, it was during day time and the vibe was amazing! During the tour, we went to Ibiza 3 or 4 times. This was our last show there for the summer and it was the best end show of the season we could ask for. It definitely should not be missing on our list.
Last time, I forgot to ask you something I was actually really curious about. If you guys could choose an artist to work with for a new track right now, who would you choose?
We would pick Don Diablo. He does some pretty amazing stuff and his style has something similar to ours, so we think we could make something out of that. At the moment, we also think Joe Stone is awesome. He’s like a boss, we would like to work with him. There are so many artists we would like to work with, but if we take a look at our scene, we think those two would work out best, but there are always more. Examples would be some vocalists or Pep & Rash, they’re also really great. They’re our buddies. We always meet those guys on festivals and we always have a lot of fun with them, so it would be cool to join them in the studio. We went to Dubai with them, even in the same hotel. That was so much fun, hilarious! There are a lot more, but those ones would really match with us in the studio, in our opinion.
