At a time when the electro-house music scene is over saturated with “average Joe’s”, Lucky Date remains one of the top producers who stands out as a unique talent. From creating hits on Hardwell’s label to being Zedd’s right hand-man, 25 year-old Jordan Atkins-Loria has built a name for himself and has truly come into his own.
As someone who loves to spread knowledge, his “Lucky Date Academy” YouTube series has provided aspiring producers a framework for creating quality house music.
WRR was able to catch up with Lucky Date recently, where we discussed his rise to full-time producing, experimental projects, the “Who’s Lucky” podcast, and much more in this exclusive interview.
At what point did you know producing music would be your full-time career?
After one year of college I decided to take a “break” from school and try and turn music into a full time career. I was hoping it would take 1 year but it took almost 2 years until I could support myself 100% from music.
You have a number of releases on Revealed Recordings. How did you develop your relationship with Hardwell and the Revealed label-mates?
My relationship with Revealed started with my remix of Hardwell’s “Apollo” a couple years ago. That was my first house record that came out on a larger label so I see it as one of my breakthrough tracks. We kept a close relationship ever since and they are my favorite label to work with!
With deep house and future house gaining steam in popularity recently, do you see some of your productions going that route?
I am definitely taking influence from popular sounds but don’t think the deep/future sound fits my style 100%. I am however writing an album for a side project right now that is much more “future” and reallllllly weird sounding.
Your ‘Lucky Date Academy’ tutorial series is quite interesting and serves as an excellent resource for aspiring producers. What inspired you to create the tutorials? Could you tell us a bit more about what they are?
Tutorials are where I started. Before I put out my first song I made my first tutorial in 2008. I see tutorials as a great way to create and online community, spread knowledge and keep my self active and learning.
How did you come up with the name for your radio show, ‘Who’s Lucky Radio’? What sets it apart from other radio shows?
I honestly don’t remember how I came up with the name, I think I did my first “Who’s Lucky” in 2010 so its been awhile. I think what separates my show from a lot of the others is the amount of attention I give each mix. I spend roughly 5-10 hours each week working on the mix, coming up with creative mixes instead of your generic Intro-Outro technique that a lot of other DJ’s use.
You had a post recently stating that people who think DJ’s play pre-recorded sets are wrong 99% of the time. Can you elaborate on this for the skeptics?
DJing is easy. Its also really fun. I’ve seen hundreds of DJ’s play and I have yet to see a pre recorded mix. I think if people want to attack dj’s for cheating they should do more research on ghost production.
Do you prefer club shows or festivals?
My favorite sets have been in intimate nightclubs. You can really become one with the crowd and its nice to be able to see every face.
What can fans expect from you through the remainder of 2015?
Many new singles! Ive been working really hard this year on music and can’t wait for more to start coming out!
We would like to thank Lucky Date for chatting with us and we wish him all the best in 2015.
