Major Lazer has created a “Sound of Rum” campaign with Bacardi, one of their programs aiming to provide aspiring artists from the Caribbean the opportunity to record in the studio. The three of them all have their connections with the island culture, Diplo hailing from Florida, Washly Fire from Jamaica, and Jillionaire a Trinidadian. Their music is largely inspired by and encompasses genres that were born in these cultures such as reggae, moombahton, and dancehall. They collaborate with artists from those areas often, such as their recent biggest track “Powerful” featuring vocals of Ellie Goulding and Jamaican native Tarrus Riley. Their new EP, “Know No Better” is all about these collaborations, featuring Caribbean artists such as Busy Signal, Sean Paul, and Machel Montano.
Fans have been waiting for their new album, Music is the Weapon, to drop but the release date has been pushed to sometime this year. Fans can get their fill from episodic adventures from their cartoon series, Major Lazer, with each episode dropping a new song. They’ve been busy with the elements of this campaign since January, like creating a limited edition rum, a documentary about the island roots of rum, and now the Music Liberates Music donation program. The last track on the EP, “Front of the Line” is the main focus at the moment. Each time this track is streamed on Spotify, studio time is donated to a list of chosen artists. The end goal is to encourage collaboration and blending of the genres that inspire them and the culture they are apart of. The MLM is all about shining a light on those coming up in the music scene from the Caribbean.
Some of the artists that get to be apart of this include Mystic Davis, Triple Kay, Shokryme, Mula, and Ricky T. All of these artists hail from different countries within the Caribbean and all are equally talented. You can keep track of how many streams and hours of studio time that have been donated here. So far, plays have reached to over a million and are quickly growing. Last we checked, nearly 33 hours were donated to these artists, and with your help they can get even more. We encourage you to stream this on Spotify and help give back to the musicians that continue to inspire and create.
