A 20-year-old Michigan man died at Electric Forest Sunday after he suffered from an apparent medical emergency on the festival’s final night, according to the Muskegon Chronicle and MLIVE.com.
Brian Alan Brockette, of Caledonia, Michigan, was volunteering with an outdoor vendor when he fell ill at about 11:15 p.m.
Electric Forest organizers released this statement on Brockette’s death:
“On Sunday night, the festival’s health and safety team was alerted to a medical emergency involving an outside vendor’s volunteer. Event medical personnel responded along side Michigan State Police troopers. The man was then transported to a local hospital. We later learned that, unfortunately, he passed away.
This festival was created to celebrate life and to enjoy music in a magical setting. This has deeply affected everyone involved with the event. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and friends.”
This is not the first time someone has died at the festival. Michael Benway Jr., 37, of Connecticut, was found dead in his tent by fellow campers during the 2012 festival, according to MLive.com. In 2013, Joesph Bud Norris died, also according to MLive.com.
Electric Forest has been held for the past four years at Double JJ Resort’s in Rothbury, Michigan. UPDATE: A previous version of this article said Electric Forest was in jeopardy of losing its location after competitor SFX (which holds festivals such as Mysterland and Electric Zoo) moved to buy Double JJ Resort last year. An Electric Forest representative has since emailed us and said, “All legal matters that led to questions in Fall 2013 have long since been resolved.”
