Brothers Jacob and Victor Andersson, known collectively as the DJ and producer duo ManyFew, have been making waves across the Atlantic all over in Europe and Asia, and it’s only a matter of time before the US start feeling their vibes. These Swedes have spent the past few years garnering inspiration from their musical roots and favorable genres like disco and funk to perfectly formulate their own unique groove that re-imagines old school feels for a new generation to delve into. ManyFew’s original tracks have seen millions of plays on Spotify, with “Don’t Miss You” hitting number 5 on Italy’s iTunes charts and “Feel Good” being featured on Apple Music’s “Best of the Week Japan” playlist. Now, these talented siblings are back with their recently released single, “Where To Go” feat. Twiggy, and it’s easily become one of our favorites of the year so far. We had the chance to sit down with the guys for a quick chat to learn more about their musical upbringing, new music, what’s in the work for 2018, and the burning question — why go disco?
Hey guys! Thanks so much for taking a few minutes to chat with us. We know you’ve been making quite the splash over in Europe and Asia, but now we want the US to get to know more about you. Can you tell us a little bit about your background and when you decided to break into the industry together?
ManyFew: Hey! Thank you very much. Yes, we have always been music lovers; we were influenced by the music taste of our family. Our uncle was a traveling DJ around Sweden and he inspired us to start DJing. So we began playing at clubs and later on we felt inspired to try to do some of our own music. We started to produce a couple of our own tracks and we really enjoyed it. At the time we both were studying at Stockholm University. We began sending out those tracks to some DJs & A&R’s and got great feedback, and that inspired us to spend more time in the studio and to put all efforts into making our music.
We can imagine there must be a special dynamic between you two since your brothers. What’s it like working together and producing music as siblings?
ManyFew: Yes, we think so. We both have the same love for music and like the same style. Producing as brothers works great – we love to spend time in the studio and work on new ideas. We know each other so well and that is definitely a plus when we produce. We feel that we compliment each other in the studio very well and we don’t feel any rivalry. Usually we just play around with sounds and throw different ideas at each other, so it’s just fun to work together and make music as a team.
We love a solid dose of disco. What draws you to the old-school stylings that is very evident in your music?
ManyFew: That’s a good question. When we are producing we take a bit inspiration from everywhere! We listen to a wide range of musical genres – a mix of disco, funk, 80s pop/dance, 90s house, to urban and today’s pop music. But disco has always had a special place in our hearts so maybe we are making an unconscious decision when we produce those types of sounds.
Which artists have been your biggest inspirations in the industry so far?
ManyFew: Well, there are so many great artists but we have always been big fans of Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Giorgio Moroder, Alicia Keys to Armand Van Helden, David Guetta and many more. Also the songs from the songwriting and production team Stargate are incredible!
You’ve just released your latest single “Where To Go” feat. Twiggy. Tell us about the inspiration and production behind the track.
ManyFew: Our approach was to make a piano house/pop track with a bit disco feeling in the chorus. Twiggy sent us a vocal idea, which we really loved! We made a couple of different versions of it, but we felt that something was missing. So we continued to work until we finally reached what we were looking for. It wasn’t just one particular track that inspired us to make ‘Where To Go’ – we got a bit of inspiration from everywhere.
What’s in the works for 2018?
ManyFew: Right now we’re working on new music and have several releases coming up this year with some really talented singers. We’ve spent a lot of time in the studio lately, so we are really look forward to this year. Loads of exciting stuff coming up in 2018 — we can’t wait for what’s to come next :-)
