Having launched his DJing career back in 1990, Trance music icon, Marcel Woods has long been regarded as a highly-influential, and esteemed figure in the electronic music scene. Not surprisingly, many dance music fans were quite downcast to have received word through a lengthy Facebook post that he will be officially retiring from DJing and producing, having stated that his fast-paced career was hindering his family life. With the birth of his first child back in 2011, Marcel expressed in his post that he no longer craved the exhilarating, on-the-road life of a touring DJ, and would much rather focus on keeping his social relations strong at home.
There is no doubt that the Dutch producer will hold the perpetual respect of the industry, having not only released numerous albums and a plethora of original, and collaborative singles (with one of his most recent being “Trigger” with W&W, as well as “Don’t Ditch”, in partnership with Tiesto), but also having launched a very successful booking agency, 2-Dutch, which represents noteworthy artists such as Showtek and Justin Prime. Furthermore, Marcel Woods has been a key fixture of the Main Stages of various massive festivals across the globe, including Mysteryland and Dance Valley (in the Netherlands).
Marcel’s poignant announcement seems to have evoked a rather heartwarming reaction from the reverential dance music community, with the vast majority having wished him well through social media. An excerpt of the post can be seen below:
“Despite the love I always felt and still feel for my profession, I’m hanging up my headphones. Becoming a first-time father in 2011 was a turning point for me: I didn’t feel the urge anymore to constantly travel to faraway places…Don’t get me wrong: I’m very thankful for the level of sophistication that this extreme ‘hobby’ provided me with. Travelling the world to play my music lead me to the most beautiful places and taught me what this planet looks and feels like. But constantly crossing the continents is killing for your social life as well.
The last 18 months, I consciously slowly moved Marcel Woods to the background, resulting in fewer releases, interviews , podcasts and of course performances . Until I reached the unavoidable question: how do I want to continue this career? Well, not long ago, one morning my sweet daughter Sterre showed me the answer when I wanted to go to the office:
“Daddy, are you going to work ? Yes honey, Daddy is on his way to work. In another country, Daddy? No sweetie, Daddy is going to the office today. Oh that’s nice, otherwise Daddy will miss us, right?”
Hereby, I think I’ve made myself clear. Because indeed, Daddy missed you and your little brother and Mommy a lot when he was away. And when you and your little brother Zeb grow up and read back this letter on the Internet, you will understand that sometimes in life you face difficult decisions. I know that I have just made the right one.”
There is no doubt that Marcel Woods has made a tremendous impact in this music industry throughout his extensive career, having inspired so many with his music, in addition to having inspired so many new and talented artists, and we at WhiteRaverRafting.com wish him all the best with his future endeavours.
