WhiteRaverRafting has never been the type of website to try and limit an artists creative canvas through harsh criticism, and we never will be, we actually encourage all acts to explore and create different styles of music. And even though at the end of the day genre labels are meaningless to us. When it comes to winning awards there is really no other way to separate creators into categories.
With that being said, we believe that the International Dance Music Awards, also known in short as the IDMAs, have gotten something very wrong. The annual award ceremony, which is held at the Winter Music Conference in Miami every year, has nominated Martin Garrix for “Best Trance DJ”.
Note: For those of you who don’t know, the International Dance Music Awards includes 57 different categories. Winners are selected through voting by fans and industry professionals and according to the IDMAs two million votes are counted from 209 countries and territories each year.
To many electronic dance music listeners Martin Garrix’s sound resides in the realm of big room electro house, which as you know, doesn’t really fit in with the modern trance sound created by the likes of Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren and Markus Schulz (pictured in the ballet below).
While we don’t know how this happened, we got a good laugh out of it and we hope you did too. This category will be extremely hard for Garrix to win, not only because he doesn’t make trance, but because he’s up against trance legends named Armin van Buuren, Dash Berlin, Above & Beyond and Gareth Emery.
UPDATE: Martin Garrix is no longer listed under the trance category. Given the fix, it can be assumed that putting him under the trance category was a honest mistake.
Great work! This is the type of info that are meant to be shared around the web.
Shame on Google for not positioning this put up upper!
