Marvel Years Kills It On The Electro-Soul-Hiphop Front

Just a few months ago, the artist Wonder Years was forced to change his name due to copyright issues, and he settled upon Marvel Years as a replacement. Personally, I didn’t find this to be quite as catchy as or to convey the same idea as ‘Wonder Years’, and I was concerned about how the change would affect this young, upcoming artist. To that point, he had shown a great knack for musical arrangement and sampling, and had a ton of potential, but he was still relatively unknown and the quality of his productions had room for improvement.

With the release of his new EP, ‘Nowhere But Up’, however, he has laid any hesitations or doubts I had about him to rest. This release stays true to everything he had put out previously, but stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of technical skill and production quality. Dominated by lo-fi drum beats, extremely textured synths, and skillfully chosen and used samples, these songs pay homage to hip hop of the 90s while helping shape this new genre that has been pioneered by artists like DJ Shadow, Pretty Lights, & Michal Menert.

His sound has matured a ton, and I can comfortably say that this EP holds its own in comparison to any of the releases from PLM. Check it out below.
