Porter Robinson and friends turned Lawrence, Kansas into a midwest mecca for dance music last Monday July, 9th, at the Granada Theater. Dance music in general has been surging lately around the Kansas City area with major shows like Kaskade in downtown KCMO and Interstellar Meltdown. Porter Robinson dropping dance floor filth in Jayhawk country only added to the fueling fire of late.
The Granada slowly began to get crazier and more intense as the night grew deeper. The intimate venue made for a packed house as space was hard to come by at times. OWSLA’s very own, The M Machine, played the perfect opening role – vibrating the entire place with their unique take on sound.
Mat Zo was most impressive even with his clashing sound. By clashing, I mean that his sound is much trancier and house rooted than you might expect from opening support – a compliment to say the least. Zo slowed things up with some downtempo compared to the rest of the talent however the energy remained vibrant. At times it seemed like he transitioned into some big room trance tracks which cultivated a serene dance floor before Porter’s headlining set.
And then their was Porter – the moment everyone in Lawrence had been waiting for. Robinson has truly blossomed over the past year and the OWLSA prodigy showed no signs of slowing down during this specific set. The highlight of the night had to be his drop of ‘Language‘, which is only proper considering its featured Tour. Robinson toggled between hard gritty electro and and periods of uptempo aggressive house. His stage presence and connection with the crowd was remarkable as well.
As the electronic scene continues to grow across the bread basket, one thing is for sure – the people love it, and they want more. Although the following isn’t massive, the diverse curation of talent recently in the area provides bright hope for the future. Listen to dance music, enjoy it, and bring your friends. If the Granada was any sign, electronic music is seeding itself across the KC metro area. With both the return of Kansrocksas next summer and the second coming of Dancefestopia, production is guaranteed to grow and cater to the dance music voices throughout the midwest.
