It takes a certain kind of energy to create an electrifying vibe that captures the attention of the city that never sleeps, one that keeps the crowd engaged from the sound of the first beat to the drop of the last. On Saturday night, Matoma’s Party At Your Place World Tour touched down in New York City at Terminal 5 with The Aston Shuffle and Two Friends to do just that. From beginning to end, the crowd was booming with excitement and radiating with ecstasy, making it more than safe to say that these boys brought their A-game to New York City.
Opening up a sold out show was none other than one of our all time favorites, The Aston Shuffle. With a 9:00pm start time, Vance wasted absolutely no time to drop deliciously deep and funky beats, stating to the crowd that they best be ready for a good night. Delivering their favorable hits like “Make A Wrong Thing Rights,” The Aston Shuffle’s fantastic tunes and good vibes spread rapidly through the venue.
By 9:40 pm, the scene was set for the night ahead as a sea of dancing bodies infiltrated general admission, with not a single open spot to be seen along either the second or third tier railings up top. The crowd was euphorically moving and grooving along, loving every second of the set— and the party had only just begun. Later, The Aston Shuffle perfectly summed up their set for us when they posted on Facebook that the Terminal 5 show was everything we could have imagined and more.
Right after The Aston Shuffle wrapped up, Two Friends would take the decks right around 10:15. The two college looking bros swiftly worked the decks and threw down a mainly progressive set. They of course included their notorious soul house originals that have been generating noise all throughout the industry for the past year. Their remix of Blink 182’s I Miss You was played by The Chainsmokers at Ultra this past year and was definitely a fan favorite of the night.
In addition, we’d hear them perform their two most recent singles, Pacific Coast Highway and Overdose. Two Friends exceeded expectations and got Terminal 5 bouncing and bumping for the entire set. Be sure to keep your eyes on Two Friends, they could be the next Chainsmokers.
Headliner Matoma took the stage around 11:30 and came out to a jam packed Terminal 5. The crowd spanned back as far as the bar making it clear that Matoma has an extremely large following in NYC. Tickets were as high as $165 before the show, topping any other performance we’ve seen in a long time. On cue, Matoma creeped up to the decks, opening up with an extended but effective intro that got an already amped up dancefloor roaring with excitement. Backed by lasers blazing, he got on the mic and said “New York, this is going to be a sick night!” And in that moment, the crowd lost it.
To kick things off, Matoma brought forth the most epic intro that was then followed by all of his favorites like “False Alarm,” “Heart Won’t Forget” and “Old Thing Back.” In true New York style, Biggie and other classic r&b remixes were seamlessly infused into Matoma’s tropical house hits that flowed like a breezy throughout the venue. There wasn’t a second of downtime, or a dull moment to be had. Taking a bathroom break or running to the bar wasn’t an option as the full house entranced with Matoma’s set right through to the very end.
From the minute The Aston Shuffle set the tone for the night to Matoma’s inevitable last beat, Terminal 5 was, in every sense of the word, lit. The heat felt from a combination of the fiery beats and hundreds of sweaty bodies made it known that it was one hell of a night. Unwillingly, the masses cleared out the venue when the lights went on, but a look of gratification and thrill could be seen on all of the faces shuffling out into the cold early hours of the morning.
