Yogetsu Akasaka is a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk making waves lately with his unique take on electronic music. His focus on live looping of elements that he creates himself using tools of his trade is really unique. The artist frequently beatboxes, or plays the pan drum, then proceeds to loop them while performing traditional Buddhist Mantras on-top of them. The artist creates elaborate chords using his voice, further adding texture and harmony to the songs.
Currently, Yogetsu is doing a ‘108 days’ live-streaming, and on the everyday live-stream, he talks about various topics related to Buddhism, well-being, life, etc. In Buddhism, it’s believed that there are 108 desires. In Japan, they ring the bell 108 times at the very end of each year to greet the new year. Through this challenge, he hopes we all will have less suffering and more compassion.
His work is refreshing and truly worth watching. We highly recommend letting one of his streams play out and letting the mind take you on a journey through his music.
