Gramatik is one of those artists that just stands out from everyone else with his particular sound. We thank his sister for letting him play around with her funk, jazz, and R&B cassette tapes when he was a kid. This and his love for hip-hop artists and culture, have inspired the unique genre-blend music he creates. Denis Jasarevic has been in the scene since 2008, from releasing singles on Beatport, to being signed to Pretty Light’s label in his late teens, and finally making his own label Lowtemp Recordings in 2013. Soon after he released his first album on his new label, SB4, where it seemed he began to really expand on his style.
Jasarevic has come a long way from mixing around beats on his PC and there’s no chance in hell he is slowing down. He’s consistently working on side projects, like GRiZMATiK and Exmag, where his skills as a producer flourish even more. His most recent album, Epigram, has brought back techno and house into the mix with his already blended funky, hip-hop style. “Native Son” and “Satoshi Nakamoto” are his biggest hits from that album, with over a million-plus streams each on Sound Cloud. His most recent collab with Griz, “As We Proceed” has already reached over 800k streams.
Gramatik’s blend of hip-hop rhythms, funky jazz, and playful renditions with samples is what makes him a must see. Everything he takes on just seems to get more experimental, soulful, and refined. If you plan to attend the Middlelands festival, definitely be sure to keep him in one of your slots for that Friday. Maybe we’ll get a little GRiZMATiK or Big GRiZMATiK action on stage to top it off. If you haven’t checked out Gramatik before, we’ll leave you some of our favorite tracks as well as a short clip of from his recent Epigram tour.
