“In the year 2025, the best men don’t run for president, they run for their lives. . . .”
Stephen King, The Running Man
Varien & 7 Minutes Dead EP ‘Mirai Sekai’ is not just a musical journey. ‘Mirai Sekai’ is an epic science fiction odyssey. It is an exalted dystopian cyberpunk adventure, a la Blade Runner and A Scanner Darkly. This is not a festival banger to get firsts pumping; this is a wondrous, and at times, daunting piece of art.
“Mirai Sekai” consists of four parts, however they blend seamlessly together to tell the story of two children-turned-cyborgs as they run to escape an all-controlling Artificial Intelligence. It is cinematic, which is no doubt in large part due to Varien- he’s produced music for 300: The Rise of an Empire as well as The Purge: Anarchy.
I put my headphones on and laid on my bed as I let myself be transported somewhere into the hopefully distant and/or just completely fictional future. I let my mind drift into a dark, metallic, grungy city. I let my hero and heroine take shape.
The excitement of running from death took over as I let my mind melt to the music. As the EP starts off getting ready to “run”, my heart did too (along with my two cyborg her0es). The synths hit along with my my heroes feet. I let Varien and 7 Minutes Dead orchestrate the construction of my imaginary world note by note.
I felt anxiety. I felt excitement. I felt triumph.
There’s no doubt will be artists inspired to visually create their inspired journeys, and I’m looking forward to seeing what will sprout up. But where as movie making often has composers and producers creating scores after the director and cinematographer have created visuals, it is wonderful to see musicians at the center of direction and story-telling.
James Cameron maybe have your people call these guys up for Avatar 2.
