When you’ve won the 2012 Breakthrough Artist of the Year by Beatport, it is no easy task to keep up with everyone’s expectations. However, Mord Fustang’s debut 9999 in 1 has lived up to the lofty standards and then some.
Where does the title come from? Well according to Mord “70% of my body is made of video games”. Growing up in Estonia, Mord played a lot of video games and the album title pays adoration to the 8-bit numbers on each of the yellow cartridges.
Listening to the new album from the beginning with 1984, it doesn’t just start, it hits the ground running with drum-y electro synths so perfectly “Mord”, there isn’t much to say. There are a slue of his patented Mord-only sounds that also include Drivel, transporting us back to the awesome 2012 sounds reminiscent of “The Electric Dream”. However there is a lot of variety from glitch, to electro pop, to disco. So how did these all play into the making of the album…
Every track is way different,” he says. “The whole thing is designed for headphones and the dancefloor. What I create has to work on headphones, car stereos, and festival sound systems at the same time.
Listening to the album on repeat is the only way to feel satisfied. With the bass as high as you can make it, Milky Way (Pt. 2) will make you feel as though you’re Ender in some galactic battle. Pop with beautiful lyrics performed by LIINKS is made for a crazy Japanese music video.
Every track from “Elite Beat Agent” to “PRESS START!” stands on it’s own crazy and special Dali pedestal. Although we had to wait awhile, we’ve now got one of the most addictive albums from start to finish in years. Thank you Mord. Keep up the good work chap.
