LA based MOTOFIGHTR, made up of Alec Feld and Miles Gabriel, just released their debut EP Pacific Post Highway. The five track album is an impeccable blend of tropical deep house, jazz, world glam rock, and nu-disco. Weeks ago, we got a taste of the duo’s flavor with “Grow”, a teaser track for the EP, and with the final product here, it’s definitely a unique one that almost all music-lovers can appreciate.
Pacific Post Highway features tropical drum beats, high-hat accents, glossy synths and soothing vocals. The first track, “Real Sex” really exposes Gabriel’s passion for jazzy guitar riffs. Gabriel is a privately trained multi-instrumentalist who often sits at a keyboard to write chords or strums his guitar for leads before even touching a computer. The fusion of old-school methodology and new-school sound makes for a spectacular product.
Appropriately titled, “Piano F*ck,” begins with a rolling drum beat and bouncy piano notes, progresses into silky vocals and ends with a drum beat breakdown. The third and fourth track showcase more instrumental talents as well as synth breakdowns and vocals reminiscent of indie rock bands such as the Foals. The title track is the perfect wrap up to the album. We get a really happy tropical vibe reminiscent of Kygo mixed with impressive guitar breakdowns and a funky drum build up about four minutes in. The last-minute or so of the song reminds me of a groovy jam band style show with escalating energy.
The California-dwelling duo met by chance and the Chicago house and disco background of Feld’s mixed with Gabriel’s classical training in a variety of instruments melded into something that’s hard to identify with just a few words. These guys may just be breaking into the scene, but their sound is fresh and their skill is undeniable.
