Founder and A&R of Life and Death, a computer science graduate from the University of Pisa, fine chef and restaurant owner, keeper of an eleven thousand-piece vinyl collection, and once a semi-professional tennis player, Manfredi Romano aka DJ Tennis is a connoisseur of many crafts. But what we’ve come to love most about him is his artistry in music, his eclectic sound that draws on elements of indie dance, nu disco, house and minimal techno.
It all began in Italy, where Romano grew up managing punk bands and organizing left-field music events around the turn of the Millennium. After attending college in Pisa, he used his talents to establish DAZE, Italy’s first booking agency solely devoted to electronic music. Fast forward to 2010 and many years of experience in the underground scene later, DJ Tennis emerged with an entrancing sound that easily drew revelers in from Barcelona to Brooklyn to Miami, and all the way down through South America.
When it comes to producing, Romano has said that he consistently channels his past relationships with post-rock luminaries such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise and Fugazi.
So what exactly can you expect to hear from this man of many talents at this year’s Movement festival? A hypnotic, vibe-inducing set made up of a myriad of layered sounds to get completely lost in.
Don’t miss DJ Tennis at Movement Detroit on Monday, May 27 at the Pyramid Stage.
