The 25th MTV Video Music Awards were last night and the show was a healthy mix of ridiculous, entertaining and a little bit disturbing. Conservative parents probably canceling their MTV subscriptions today.
Here are the 11 best moments from the show including three gifs of Miley Cyrus twerking.
1.) Zedd doesn’t win MTV VMA’s ‘Artist to Watch’
I didn’t win the VMA but seeing the whole community supporting me is worth infinitely more!!! Thank you!!!
— Zedd (@Zedd) August 26, 2013
All signs pointed to a Zedd Win. “Clarity” infiltrated mainstream radio airwaves and went platinum in the US, his appearance is very MTV friendly and he’s backed by Interscope Records. Zedd remains in high spirits afterwards though and why wouldn’t he be when his ‘Moment of Clarity’ tour is selling out stops everywhere.
2.) Daft Punk Teases Again
Daft Punk skipped the Colbert Report because they were supposed to play at the VMAs. Of course they didn’t play at the VMAs, though two people dressed in Daft Punk masks did present an award to Taylor Swift. MTV also showed a teaser video for their new single that sounds just like “Get Lucky”.
3.) Daft Punk and Calvin Harris Combined Can’t Beat One Direction
One Direction took home the Song of the Summer Moonman for “Best Song Ever” with over 8 million votes. Daft Punk and Calvin Harris combined had around 100,000 votes. Somehow it’s unlikely that Daft Punk nor Calvin Harris are concerned that they lost. Maybe instead of becoming DJs, people should try and become pop stars.
4.) Taylor Swift Tells Harry Styles to “Shut The Fuck Up”
5.) Miley Cyrus Twerking was FULL ON Ratchet
Blame Diplo for poisoning the youth.
From MTV:
Miley embraced her role as the new twerk queen as she stripped off her bear-emblazoned leotard to cavort with Robin Thicke for a performance of the singer’s Pharrell Williams-produced mega-hit “Blurred Lines,” which is in the running for Video of the Year. With Thicke clad in a black-and-white-striped suit, Miley gave him an up close and personal private twerk show as the song climaxed.
Billy Ray Cyrus must be very proud.
Spin Magazine truly captured the emotion of the moment with this screenshot of Will Smith and family reacting to the twerking.
6.) MTV Censors “Molly” References
In Miley Cyrus’ autotuned anthem “We Can’t Stop” she references molly and cocaine, which MTV would have no part of. Kanye West got the same treatment when he rapped “Blood on the Leaves” off his new album Yeezus. For some reason a drug reference in a song is too much for people to handle, but a half-naked twenty year-old girl twerking is okay. America…
7.) Eminem Reveals Marshall Mathers LP 2 in Commercial
Eminem is back and sounds furious as ever. Just listen to his new track “Survival”. In a commercial that aired during the VMAs, he announced that we will be getting Marshal Mathers LP 2 on November 5, 2013.
In other Eminem news, The Guardian was at his headlining set at Glasgow where, “The 40-year-old rapper’s career-spanning set is short on new material but his stage presence is as potent as ever.”
8.) Katy Perry Looked Like Crap, But Still Melted Hearts
Performing from a “secret undisclosed location” in Brooklyn, Katy Perry performed her new single “Roar”. The audience however was focused on Perry’s unflattering choice to dress as a boxer with a tiger print sports bra. The undervalued queen of American dance-pop, still managed to melt hearts though and even the POTUS couldn’t resist getting a RT in.

We see you Obama.
9.) Close Your Eyes and Imagine a Drake Show, Yeah That Was It
It’s too easy to take shots at the black leather tank top and jiggly arms, so we’ll just direct you to this tumblr.
10.) Justin Timberlake Reminds Everyone “I Still Run This Bitch”
The *NSYNC reunion gimmick was fun, but the Justin Timberlake medley emanated a natural swagger that just can’t be mimicked by other artists (see #9).
don’t regret it
get it right here
