I’ve been a fan of Archnemesis for a while now. I was originally tugged in by the electro-soul type style they possessed; my first thoughts were “wow, this sounds a whole lot like Pretty Lights.” My nearsightedness was soon to destroyed as I continued my way down the “People’s Radio” EP. Archnemesis is a brand completely of their own.
Combining funk, soul, blues, jazz, hip-hop, rap, and some crazy synth work, Archnemesis goes deep into the past and far into the future. Today, we were graced with their latest release, “Follow Me”, which is a huge step forward for the group. With four original tracks, each of great variety, Archnemesis proves that they are a leading force in a driving wave of timeless music.
As mentioned above, what makes this EP great is its variety. Each track is definitely Archnemesis; the textured synths, the smooth hip-hop beats and scattered sampling cannot be missed. However, each possess its own flavor that sets it apart from the rest. The EP begins with a funky intro of drums and horns, which then moves into the first track, “Hear the Love”.
This opening track is extremely soulful, but extremely synthesized as well. Female soul samples fade between gritty and texturized synths. The song has a definite element of funk as well, incorporating horns and a funky synth wobble. For some reason this song makes me imagine Earth, Wind & Fire playing a show as a giant fighting robot shoots out lasers into the crowd. But that’s just me.
The next song on the EP, “Bumpin”, speaks for itself. Featuring distorted sampling and textured synths, this song has a very danceable beat which will get your body moving easily. “Aim For The Sky” is an emotional track, being a bit downtempo and containing scattered sampling, textured synths and great use of instrumentation, such as horns and some funky guitar licks. It breaks down into a very soulful section, which then drops into an assortment of synths that will be sure to scramble your mind but please your ear drums.
The final song, “Follow Me”, has a chill, jazzy feel, with 1920s style piano keys accompanied by some nice drum effects. Funky horns lead into a drop with a texturized synth lead which will make your body move in unison with each note. Space-age synth keys cast behind it for a futuristic yet vintage sound, as well as a unique use of 90s-esque hip-hop sampling.
