It’s been a good year for MYLK, 2015 showcased a wide array of singles and mixes from the UK solo artist. With a sound and style that stands out, MYLK has created a world of music that’s all it own. Pulling from genres like Kawaii, trap, jazz and more, MYLK’s poppy, catchy, and highly entertaining sound is simultaneously surprising and gratifying. MYLK linked up with RaverRafting for her first-ever interview as well as an exclusive mix, check out the conversation in full below and the mix above.
How would you describe your sound?
Experimental but with a huge influence of future bass/jersey club/uk garage/trap/house and jpop/kpop/jazz.
In the UK, have you found other producers making music somewhat similar to your style?
Not exactly, but I know Geek Boy and he makes the most “similar” out of everyone else I know here in Manchester. We have planned on a few collaborations and one is finished. 🙂
What inspired or influenced you to select Kawaii and pop/dance elements as your focus for MYLK in 2015?
I have huge love for Yasutaka Nakata’s work, i.e. Perfume and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu as well as Capsule and their lyrics are cute and simple. I am 100% Japanese but I have been brought up in Europe all my life, therefore my Japanese education is actually quite poor even if I can communicate casually. It made sense to me that I could write cute Japanese songs, and I really enjoyed creating a lot of melodic music. It all just kind of came together in a big light bulb to spread cute songs across the western side of the world.

Are you familiar with Nap Girls? Do you have an opinion on the movement?
I am not not, but I am now. I think its great to have a movement based on female equality on the dance music scene/industry, I fully support this. 🙂
Your “Candy Pop” single showcases catchiness, variety, and wide arrays of energy levels, what kind of experience do you aim to create with your single?
I always had a motto when I started music at 15 – “Keep the listeners entertained” hence I never repeated many things in terms of production too. I liked to throw in many varieties of different vibes and feels because variety is always fun 🙂 I think this is also why I like to be experimental.
Is there a message to be learned through your image and music?
There isn’t much to learn from… though I’d say be whatever you want to be, and be happy I guess, life is too short. My image is a personal thing, in terms of my wig being half pink and half blue, it means half happiness and half sadness, because my life was quite a mix, I suffered from bipolar due to post traumatic incidents which I think led me to produce super happy stuff all the time, because in a way it made me happy too. On the deep end its actually quite a sad story but I don’t want to go into that 🙂 I will keep making happy music <3
What were some of your coolest moments career-wise in 2015?
Releasing with a label – I never took my music seriously until the end of 2014, which drove me to spread the kawaii music 🙂
Acquiring a manager – I never expected to have a partner in crime and he has done so much for me it brings a tear to my eye :’)
Connecting with artists I never thought I’d connect with.
Getting Interviewed! This is my first time 😀
Whats the plan for 2016?
Make more music of course, probably more experimental stuff too! I’ve finished a few collaborations so I assume they will all release sometime in 2016 or later, it all depends on the other half. 🙂
