The man with a mask has just dropped his first single. Myndset’s “25th hour” is a pop – progressive house single featuring vocals of Jason Caesar, who has worked with the likes of Deniz Koyu, Fedde Le Grand and Laidback Luke. The song exudes a catchy riff with progressive chords that reflect upon a great friend and perhaps the writer of the single.
So not only was WRR given Myndset’s FIRST and debut single “25th hour”, but we have been fortunate enough to interview him and find out more about who exactly is behind the mask. Check it out after the jump.
1. Okay, you knew this would be the first one. Where did MYNDSET come from?
The name just came to me after telling myself that when I create this mask I need to get into a ‘mindset’ and really give myself to becoming the best performer and producer I can be.
2. Where did the helmet idea begin and where did you find that gem?
The inspiration for the helmet was actually a disguise. The helmet was all custom designed. I am disguising myself between using 2 different DJ aliases and that is why I created it.
3. A few months ago when we saw you live at the Stone Rose Lounge, you seemed surprised that we knew who you were, are you shocked when fans know your real identity?
I wasn’t completely surprised about you guys knowing my real identity because I had been meeting and greeting fans unmasked earlier that evening, but I was more surprised with the fact you guys took the trouble to ask people who and where I was. I felt important in that moment!
4. You are important! On to the music. During your set, we noticed you had a wide range of mixes. We also noticed you went heavy on the Calvin Harris -Thumbs up. Who do you love to mix the most and why?
It just so happens that Calvin Harris has made more hit singles this year than anyone. So naturally its easy to play his tracks because not only because of their wide commercial appeal but because his productions are fantastic. I also like playing other high-energy producers like Dada Life and Autoerotique,
5. We loved hearing a little old school during your set (Eric Clapton.) How do you feel about incorporating the classics into new school EDM? Do you notice a particular reaction from the crowd?
I grew up riding along in the car with my parents listening to 60s and 70s music. It was a great generation for original music. So much stuff we use today is still being sampled from that era. When you play an old song you get a few people in the crowd who are educated about older genres and its always interesting when you capture those people’s attention. Someone who maybe wasn’t necessarily sold on EDM until that point you dropped a buck wild Eric Clapton “Cocaine” electro remix and that dude who hadn’t heard that song for 10 years just lost his mind that you busted it out on that crowd at that instant.
6. Do you have robot legs?
Tentacles.
7. How do you feel about the explosion of the “EDM” scene? Where do you feel it is headed? For better or worse?
This is a question I get in every interview. I know many are worried about the integrity of the scene while others are happy about the mainstream attention it’s getting. I think in due time you’ll start to see a dichotomy between the corporate/commercial vs. the indie/underground scene. Everyone will just find their own niche in due time.
8. What is your favorite thing about your job?
Making friends and making money. In that order.
9. Who inspires you musically?
So many it’s hard to list. I draw inspiration from a wide pallet of artists/producers out there. Dr. Dre to Daft Punk, Sade to Kanye, Kaskade to Al Green.
10. How did you get into DJing and where did you learn the trade?
I got into DJing after being cut from the basketball team as a freshman in high school. I learned the trade from a good friend who actually started mixing with 2 tape decks of all things! He would find songs with similar tempos and then nudge the tapes with FFWD and Rewind to match the BPMs and then record the mix to a 3rd tape deck. Soon thereafter we got our first pair of turntables.
11.What or who are you listening to these days?
Currently going through a talk radio phase.
12. All time favorite song?
Nothin’ But A G Thang.
13.What’s your favorite music blog? (There is a right answer to this)
Haha. You already know!
