Walking into the swanky Stone Rose Lounge, we were greeted with Todd Terje’s “Inspector Norse” booming through an extensive sound system that surrounded the group of miscellaneous fashion and music lovers. New York DJ Matt Cash, who came prepared with his vinyl collection in tow, was behind spinning the Terje tune. We only caught the conclusion of Matt’s set, but after talking with him and seeing his disco ball tattoo, we gathered he’s been a usual Gerber Group DJ and music lover who frequents many NYC shows himself.
Just before midnight, with the help of a knowledgeable fan (or maybe groupie), we were able to spot the man behind the music without his signature mask/helmet. The conversation with MYNDSET and his manager led to a casual and laidback discussion about his affinity for the music and the scene.
Soon after meeting him, MYNDSET took the stage and stood behind what looked like a giant wood log, fully equipped with turntables and computers. MYNDSET’s set list was chock full of pop goodies. Included in his mix the robot faced DJ dropped his own mixes of Zedd, Martin Solveig and plenty of Calvin Harris. MYNDSET also dropped two particular songs that I always enjoy. Eric Clapton’s ‘Cocaine’ remix, and the second a Janet Jackson Remix by Torro Torro called ‘Go Deep’- which may be one of my favorite songs right now.
If there was one thing we could walk away with from meeting MYNDSET it was that his enthusiasm for music and the electronic scene was all focused on his fans. Not only did he not even hesitate to chat with us pre-show, he also was seen high-fiving, reaching out to, taking videos and pictures of, and even dancing with the crowd. The level of MYNDSET’s energy was so invigorating even the bartender ignored her patrons to keep dancing on her bar.
Overall it was an awesome night, getting to meet MYNDSET and party with some of his biggest NYC fans who left the lounge with sore dancing feet and anything-but-disappointed grins.
