Exclusive Interview
Can you share a memorable experience or anecdote from one of your marathon sunrise sets at Burning Man?
In 2019 I played a sunrise at Celtic Chaos. It was one of the last memories I have with Crowe, who lost his life in 2020. I had only planned on playing for 4 hours max, from 5:30-9:30, but by 8:30 people had kept showing up, and by 9:30 it was still a full blown party, so I kept going for another hour and a half til my USB’s both corrupted and I couldn’t go anymore. Probably for the best, I definitely needed sleep.
How has being a survivor of depression influenced your music and your message?
I never felt heard by anyone when I was growing up, and when I was released from the hospital in 2012, I still felt both misunderstood and like my words fell on deaf ears. Then and there I decided to start speaking openly to as many people as I could (even if it were a vacuum) about my experience and about how anyone else going through a similar experience was not alone. As I started to get a platform (albeit small af), I continued to share my experience on social media, and to my pleasant surprise, a lot of people resonated with it. Social media has a tendency to be toxic as fuck, so if I can inject a dose of reality, both the ups and the downs, maybe it’ll encourage other people to feel safe to talk to their friends about their own experiences.
When did you first become interested in veganism, and what motivated you to adopt a vegan lifestyle?
I started my journey with veganism in 2017. After I saw Okja and cried a lot (lol I know) I became curious about going vegetarian. A few months later when I moved to San Francisco, I lived with 14 people in a commune, many of whom were vegan. I decided to give it a go, and haven’t looked back. The biggest surprise was how delicious life can be without meat… and I’m definitely happy I’m making this choice now vs 30 years ago.
What is the creative dynamic between you, David Hohme, and the sound of Where The Heart Is?
David and I sat down for our first session last November, believe it or not. I had no idea how it was going to go since our productions are pretty different, but we ended up having an absolute blast and finding a happy medium that lives somewhere in the dark beautiful vibey club melodic world. When I was just in Portland for the WTHI showcase, we sat back down with the project after 5 months off and polished off something that would fit at the end of my sets (and hopefully anywhere in David’s). I love working with people who have different sounds, the product is always at the very least something interesting.
How do you stay connected with your fans and supporters, especially during challenging times?
I try to be relatable, and am 100% myself all the time. Obviously we all want to put our best foot forward on social media, but I try to also document normal life, like my cats or propagating plants or going to the museum. I respond to everyone who messages me, and try to keep the line of communication open at all times. I’m so incredibly grateful to anyone who follows me or comes to my set, and I want them to know that. I wouldn’t be anywhere close to where I am without them.
In what ways do you think the music industry can support and promote veganism and sustainable living?
More DJs (including myself) can dive into the carbon offset world and spread the word about it to their fans. It does seem like things are slowly getting better – there are fewer single use plastics, more vegan options at clubs & festivals, etc. The amount of energy that it takes both to travel and to put on an event like a festival or Burning Man is the biggest suck on the environment and we could do a better job trying to offset those effects.
