Steez Promo brought a remarkable lineup to Washington D.C.’s Echostage for the return of MEGA. The nation’s capital got a taste of English style EDM as the show featured the UK’s Nero, Delta Heavy, and Doorly along with America’s Bro Safari and few other up and coming dubstep DJ’s. Lesser known acts KnoxBox, Des McMahon, and Killsonic used their hunger to fuel high energy, bass thumping sets. KnoxBox, a local DJ from Maryland had an intense set full of heavy dubstep and trap music.
Des McMahon showed versatility by conducting a set that included moombahton, chill dubstep, deep house, and tracks that blended dubstep with trance. The name Killsonic sounds more like a heavy metal band than a DJ name and it certainly showed throughout his set. In his headbanging-dubstep arrangement, he sprinkled in a few rock songs such as Linkin Park’s “Lost in the Echo” and Asking Alexandria’s “Closure”. EDM veteran Bro Safari, who is signed onto Diplo’s Mad Decent record label, presented a set that had all the ladies ‘expressing themselves’ and shaking their tailfeathers. He played many explosive Moombahton and dance-dubstep tracks that included the likes of Knife Party, Major Lazer, and his own creations.
As impressive as the former artists listed were, the three primary acts from the UK showed up and had a stranglehold on the crowd. Doorly, a veteran “everything” DJ who has toured with Usher, Skrillex, and Fatboy Slim and has a summer residence in Ibiza (Spain), brought his international experience to the booth. His polished DJ skills showed with smooth transitions between tracks and a great flow during the set. As I alluded to earlier, he displayed his “everything” style by playing pop-house mashups, funky glitch-hop, dubstep, and electro house.
Delta Heavy had a fast paced set that had everybody high stepping and crisscrossing their feet every which way. They played many popular dubstep tracks that you’d probably find on UKF Dubstep’s YouTube channel along with many of their own well known drum & bass style tracks such as “Demons”, “Hold Me”, and “Space Time”.
After much anticipation, Nero finally came on and delivered an excellent 90 minute set. Although it was only one member of Nero who showed up, he made up for his two missing band mates by raging hard behind the booth as if he was part of the crowd. The set featured many Nero songs from their album “Welcome Reality+” and several other dubstep hits from artists like Skrillex and Knife Party. The best part may have been the unforeseen closing track which was a dubstep mix of System of a Down’s “Chop Suey”. It was a hard track that created an emotional connection with Nero as the crowd sang the well-known lyrics and Nero sang it back to the crowd.
Thanks to Steez Promo for having us out at the event.
