One of the most established, and prominent venues in eastern Canada, Toronto’s sizeable dance music community has been fairly downcast since it was announced that The Guvernment and Kool Haus Entertainment Complex would be closing down come January 2015. Currently owned by INK Entertainment, and even having been ranked #38 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 Club poll for 2014, the complex opened its doors back in 1996, and has since grown with the electronic music scene from its early days to accommodate its recent upshot in popularity.
However, to quell the unease amongst electronic music fans, CEO of Ink Entertainment, Charles Khabouth, has revealed that there are plans to revamp and improve another notable Toronto club, Sound Academy. Furthermore, Khabouth has also divulged that the company has a new project in the works, which, supposing all of the legalities are taken care of smoothly, will be located downtown;
“We have a plan for something much, much larger – like double the size [of Guvernment]. We’re committed to sticking by the scene, and we’re committed to continuing what we do best, and that is live shows and electronic dance music.”
Not surprisingly, it has been approximated that this project of such expanse will take around 3 years to be completed. By the sounds of it, this new venue will be a real game-changer in Toronto’s already prolific nightlife scene, although The Guvernment/Kool Haus Complex will always evoke a poignant nostalgia within seasoned ravers, as well as artists (such as iconic progressive house producer Deadmau5) who began their careers playing in the smaller rooms of the complex.
