USA Today, SBNation and various other reliable news outlets have reported that the Broncos wide receiver, return specialist and hydration enthusiast, Wes Welker, has been suspended for a month (4 games) after violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
The 33-year-old tested positive for a banned amphetamine, the team announced Tuesday, September 2. Although the NFL cannot publicly disclose which substances are found after administering such tests, sources such as The Daily Mail are speculating that Welker consumed MDMA – better known as “Molly” or “Ecstasy.”
In a letter that was emailed to the Denver post, Welker wrote:
“I’m as shocked as everyone else at today’s news. I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I would NEVER knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage in any way. Anyone who has ever played a down with me, lifted a weight with me, even eaten a meal with me, knows that I focus purely on what I put in my body and on the hard work I put in year round to perform at the highest levels year-in and year-out.
I want any youth football players and all sports fans to know, there are NO shortcuts to success, and nothing but hard work and studying, leads to success.
I have never been concerned with the leagues performance enhancing or drug abuse policies because under no scenario would they ever apply to me, but I now know, that (drug-policy procedures) are clearly flawed, and I will do everything in my power to ensure they are corrected, so other individuals and teams aren’t negatively affected so rashly like this.
I have worked my whole life to be the best that I can be, and I have encountered many obstacles over my career, and THIS WILL BE NO DIFFERENT!
Thank you for the outpouring of support, and I want Bronco nation to know, that no one and no thing will get in the way of our goal as a team, to bring Mr. Bowlen the trophy he and this great region deserve.”
Then, after Welker read a report that claimed he took “Molly” at the Kentucky Derby he responded with:
“I wouldn’t have any idea where to get a Molly or what a Molly is. That’s a joke. I don’t do marijuana, I don’t do drugs. I don’t do any drugs.”
However, it was reported that Welker did wonder if someone put something in his drink at the Derby. There is no doubt that his letter is powerfully apologetic, but fans are still very upset.
In an effort to make their stern opposition to this kind of behavior known, the National Football League released a statement announcing that they’ll be banning Kandi and Camelbaks from official NFL stadiums and locker rooms from this point forward. Their board believes that “CamelBaks present a safety issue and are prohibited, as they can easily be used to store illicit materials.“
Commissioner Roger Goodell also commented on the Kandi ban stating, “I never wear Kandi and I understand it’s not drug related culture inherently .. We just had serious issues with players hiding it .. and there was a definite relationship between safety and security and made it so we had to ban certain items from out facilities.”
It’s clear that the NFL believes these items are directly related to Welker’s incident and will do everything in their power to prevent drug use from permeating their organization. One of their newly instituted safety tactics will require NFL players to watch a roughly two-minute long video that displays the effects of MDMA. If that doesn’t stop MDMA from overrunning the NFL, I don’t know what will.
Personally, I am infuriated by the situation and its effect on my wide receiver choice for my fantasy team. To express my disdain for their overzealous plan of action, I plan to boycott all future NFL operated festivals. WHO’S WITH ME??
