One of the most consistent artists in dance music, Nihil Young has proved time and time again his dedication to his craft. This innovative producer-DJ hybrid has a versatile skill set when it comes to production. He is able to make a wide spectrum of anthems, from heavy techno bangers to infectious progressive house tracks. Nihil’s passion and creativity towards EDM along with his signature style has led to features on an assortment of prominent labels, such as Toolroom, Zerothree, Odd One Out, and Purified.
Returning with his latest melodic masterpiece, Nihil has unveiled his remix of “Lorean”, originally by his friend and fellow collaborator Talal. Putting an entrancing spin on the track, Nihil delivers interstellar sound effects, gripping synths, and other elements that transform “Lorean” into an electrifying edit. We were fortunate enough to chat with Nihil about his remix of “Lorean” and more aspects of his project.
Check out RaverRafting’s exclusive interview with Nihil Young below:
What was your approach to remixing Talal’s track Lorean?
When I approach remixing, I always look for sounds that fit my current sound design ideas, if any. In this case, I used a couple of ambiances and the lead from Talal and turned it into a groove rather than a lead melody. I then arranged my sound design around that groove.
Can you walk us through your creative process when starting a new track? What challenges did you face while working on this remix?
I did make this remix in a day, so I didn’t face any particular challenge. When I’m inspired and in a good creative mood, it’s easier to get stuck. If anything, some mixing issues can arise, and I can go back to the project after a few days with fresh ears to give the mix more love and fine-tune it properly. Starting a track from scratch can take several approaches: I can get easily inspired by a single Kick I’m designing, a bassline or an arpeggio idea. Sometimes I browse ambiance samples or samples I previously recorded and stored to get inspired. Sometimes I even look at some of my ancient tracks to see if I left something interesting there that I could revisit or expand on.
How did you link up with Talal originally?
I’m sure we’ve met at ADE — where I met many other amazing humans I can safely call friends — through some familiar friends. We’ve been great amigos ever since, sharing many good memories and releases. Talal is one of the kindest, most genuine, and most funny guys I know.
How do you think this remix fits into the rest of Where The Heart Is’ catalog of releases?
I would argue that it’s slightly more aggressive than the label’s current releases, but it still reflects the melodic side of the label and has a sweetness to it.
Most importantly, I sincerely hope you like it.
How has your sound evolved over the years?
I have always looked into all genres as sources of inspiration, looking back at electro, breaks, Disco, Funk, Hip Hop, Italo Disco, and even Drum’n’Bass. Over the years I have thoroughly explored all these genres, and I tried to combine some elements from them into what I was producing. I made everything from electro to downbeat, Tech House, House, Nu Disco, Techno, and Progressive, pretty much ever since I can remember making music., both as Nihil Young and as Less Hate.
What qualities do you look for in labels you work with, and what made you sign on to remix a release on Where The Heart Is?
I am incredibly grateful to any label that has supported me and believed in my music in any shape or form, whether by signing it, requesting remixes or even playlisting my music from other labels.
I share my music with the labels that impress me sonically. Otherwise, I tend to stick to kind and loving teams whenever I encounter them.
Regarding Where The Heart Is, the team has been super kind and lovely throughout the process, and Talal is a perfect friend of mine, so I definitely couldn’t say no.
