Earlier this month Echostage became home of the Ninja Nation tour as DC MEGA welcomed back Datsik along with an awesome lineup including Kennedy Jones, LOUDPVCK, and Waka Flocka Flame.
Opening acts Barely Alive and Trolley Snatcha warmed up the quickly growing crowd with some great sets infused with hip-hop and dubstep. It had been a while since I’ve heard dubstep at Echostage so their sets were a real treat.
Next up Kennedy Jones brought us a bassy trap set along with playing some of his own hits including his own remix of ‘Suavemente’. Ending the set he showed his appreciation for DC by treating us to a rap about the Ninja Nation tour coming to Echostage.
Next up we had in my opinion one of the most energetic sets of the night. The LA duo LOUDPVCK took the stage…bringing so much energy and it was apparent that the crowd was feeling it. One of my personal favorite things is when you can tell when DJ(s) are having just as much fun as the crowd. Their set included crowd favorites such as Knife Party’s “Bonfire”, Jack U’s “Take U There” and they ended their set with their own remix of Dada Life’s ”Freaks”.
Now for the most anticipated part of the night, around 1 AM a black curtain covering the stage dropped and revealed the Vortex. The bass started rumbling and Datsik took his place in the center while visuals started to appear within the vortex. Once the music started I was faced with the most intense bass I’ve heard (or not heard) in a long while. It was both ear shattering and amazing at the same time. Combined with the lights and the vortex, Datsik created a fun atmosphere that could be felt throughout the venue. Some favorite moments included when he played Excision & Space Laces’ “Destroid 7 Bounce”, and when he had the crowd dancing to Skrillex’s “Ragga Bomb”. Towards the end of his set he made his way to the front of the stage and jumped into the crowd to Flux Pavilion’s “I Can’t Stop”.
Everyone knew that Datsik was not the end of the excitement. Once he left the stage, it was time for Waka Flocka to take the stage and pretty much be the best send off to the Ninja Nation Tour. The crowd wasn’t finished dancing and kept partying with Wocka until 4 in the morning.
It’s safe to say that DC MEGA brought it yet again, and I can’t wait to see what they bring to DC next.
