As ODESZA made their way through the southeast on the North American stretch of their wildly sold out In Return Tour, Atlanta was lucky enough to secure not just one, but two nights of breathtaking performances by the brilliant duo of Harrison Mills (CatacombKid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches). The Masquerade in Old Fourth Ward hosted both shows on the Heaven stage of the complex, though located on a second story felt more like a grimy basement setting. Though a peculiar choice for a group that could likely have packed a much larger venue like Atlanta’s famous Tabernacle or even the most aesthetically pleasing Terminal West, venue hardly matters with talent like ODESZA at your focal point.
After witnessing ODESZA’s transfixing live set on the Amphitheatre stage at Suwannee Hulaween the previous weekend my sole obligation in the upcoming days was to find a way into either night of the insanely sold out shows. As a live music fanatic who easily frequents 2 to 3 shows per week, it was a spiritual realization to have actual chills from a set and experience that feeling of falling in love with music all over again.
The stars aligned and my hump day quickly transported me to what would surely be another magical evening of ethereal percussion, future bass, and effortless melodies. Foreign Family Collective signee, Kasbo, and ODESZA remixed artist, Hayden James, opened up both nights keeping the eager crowds moving until ODESZA took the stage just before 11 p.m. The simplistic visuals and lighting against Mills and Knight’s silhouettes perfectly mirror the easy going nature of their sound. You felt a little tug on the heart strings with every beat of the drum or when their excitement on stage seemed to match that of the crowd.
They touched on all of their hits, “My Friends Never Die,” “Memories That You Call,” “Say My Name,” and “Sun Models” to name a few, but when you’re dealing with a library of perfection like in this case you couldn’t go wrong with any form of their set list. A third silhouette emerged at the end of the show during their “Something About You” remix, which despite the lack of visual id in the foggy room we’ll assume was the original artist and opener, Hayden James.
Every smile was wide and arm held high. It was another electric night for the books that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon. The In Return tour continues this week in Austin, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston.
