Sounds of the underground have been coming in hot and heavy in 2020. From grooving, ethereal beats to gut-wrenching moments that engulf us whole, players in the techno scene have unleashed some of their most audacious and innovative work to get the year rolling on a severely elevated note. In our latest volume of On Tuesdays We Techno, we’ve featured some of these must-listen selects of the new year for you to enjoy and set off on a proper spiral down the ever so dark and delicious rabbit hole.
Initiating the blow is Mark Reeve with “Serum,” a brand new banger off of his tenacious four-track EP Distance on Drumcode. Tested to the masses by Beyer himself at a special collaborative event with Cercle, the track grips you and jets off as it professes with a low-end rumble and intricate keys.
Beyers legendary label continues to captivate us as we move into another beauty by Julian Jeweil. After making his Drumcode debut with Transmission, the Frenchman returns with a raw and ravey five-tracker EP Schema. Our favorite of the bunch is the title track, offering a wildly immersive ride said to be primed for a Sunday session at Berlin’s Berghain.
Our midway point of the spiral gets groovier with Matt Sassari’s “Everytime I See You.” This track is sprinting up Beatport’s Top 100 Techno Chart and for hell of a good reason; it’s got a soulful sound, shuffling beats, catchy vocals, and an irresistible essence that’ll get your body moving. The track is part of this rising talent’s four-cut EP Crack Body, marking the emerging French artist’s debut on Truesoul.
Matador then swoops in to deliver our latest 7-minute “Desire.” For this brooding beauty on RUKUS, the Irish producer and industry dignitary said, “I reached back to my Matador roots for this one – tougher, faster, with melodic touches and a magnetic hook.”
Driving us home is the L.A. stalwart Brennen Grey with “Voice of the Void.” Acting as the middle man to his three-track EP Carpe Omne on Respekt Records, this track is a haunting chill-inducer made up of gothic choirs and demonic drones that feel both ferocious and seductive — can’t say it gets much better than that.
