Hot off the press at Onamazu records is a new EP from KACE titled “The Kace Files.” This 3 track compilation embodies the urban spirit, capturing the modern trip-hop/trap soul with ease and keeping alive the “headnod freedom” all sound heads hunt endlessly for.
The first track, “She Cast A Spell” cascades in with the familiar dusty timbres associated with a Wu-Tang Clan track, slowly breaking down into an absolutely stellar beat-down that has the track banging and kicking for its entire duration. It’s supplemented with a haunting synth line that adds a dim colour pallet to the song, serving more as a rhythmic addition than as a melody.
“Boy Who Cried Wolf” is a beautiful composition, staying true to the theme of the EP in pushing a very oriental timbre throughout the 2:56 minutes of the track. Standing out above the mix are the melodious synths that dot the intro and blend seamlessly into the wolf howl samples. It’s really the simplicity here that keeps the entire song fresh, as it plays out very progressively with the different instruments layered dynamically to continue an organic flow throughout.
As a true homage to the modern urban musical atmosphere of New York, the track “NYC” envelopes you within the contemporary take on the boom-bap hip-hop beat stylization. It features a heavy handed emphasis on hi-hat rolls and crashing 808s to flesh out one of the gnarlier trap songs we’ve received in the first 12 days of 2016. The synth design fills the air of the track with a twisted din that compliments the acoustic strings heard throughout the resting points in the song and beefs up the drops with just the right punch.
Keep your heads up and ears open for more aural wetness coming from KACE this calendar year, and from all other artists associated with Onamazu Records.
