Since releasing the album preview on Wednesday we have been patiently awaiting the release of Opiuo’s second album, “Meraki”. Its been a year and a half since the 30 year old Kiwi (New Zealander) released “The Butternut Slaps Part 3,” which the adjective filled artist described as “sizzling swunk-o-bass-monk“. In the meantime he‘s kept himself busy remixing tracks from artists such as Pretty Lights, Kimbra, and Koan Sound while touring all over Australia.
“Meraki” is a colorful medley of electronic sounds. He describes it saying, “It’s full of all the things I love about music, and it truly is my best I can do at this very moment.” He plays around with break beat, funk boogie, and glitch hop while using a variety of sounds including guitar, horns, and sax. It’s impossible to keep still while listening to the upbeat tempo, infectious drums, and gritty synths.
Meraki gets you started with “Snorkle,” a fun hard-hitting track that sets the tone for the album. Collabs with Gift Of Gab & Syreneyiscreamy (on Life), Beats Antique (in Chubby Putty), and Russ Liquid (On Your Side) contribute to the soulful collection of songs. “On Your Side” and “It Was” close out the album with relaxed tempo and uplifting, cerebral sounds.
Check out the album below and if you get a chance to see Opiuo perform at Euophoria, Shambhala, Sonic Bloom or Red Van City in Vancouver this summer, definitely attend.
