Echostage is always bringing DC big names in electronic music. Their insane lasers and sound matched with the spacious dance floor is the perfect venue when hosting artists that draw large crowds. Last weekend they brought us the Pardon My French Tour, and it was a night you shouldn’t have missed.
While sometimes a sold out show can mean an overpacked crowd and a lot of pushing, the overall vibe remained easy going yet hype. People sported priest and nun costumes in support of Tchami and Pardon My French snap backs floated around, something we wished we had been lucky enough to grab. Future artists hailing from Paris, France Point Point kicked off the night, which was a pleasant surprise and the night only got better from there.
The mysterious Malaa started out the night with his dark sounds and scary ski mask, dropping tracks from Yellow Claw to Disclosure. The venue stayed dark during his set with minimal lasers used which added to the overall mysteriousness of this artist. While we had just seen him at ULTRA Miami, his set was fresh and he brought plenty of that heavy hitting bass house of his. Mercer took the stage next and perfectly set the stage for Tchami and DJ Snake with his energy filled selections.
With a short intermission to set up for Snake, the stage was transformed to feature a high set stage giving Snake the ability to look down and out onto the crowd surrounded by small spikes that lit up that almost reminded us of icicles. The visuals were great and Snake definitely pumped up the crowd, but his set tended to lean toward a lot of Yellow Claw tracks which was a bit disappointing seeing as Snake has many popular originals of his own.
TCHAMI. Going into this event I held Tchami and DJ Snake on the same level. After having an amazing experience seeing DJ Snake at EDC NY 2015 I didn’t expect to leave with an overwhelming favorite other than Snake. However, in my mind, Tchami’s entire set created the best energy of the night. People were dancing hard and not letting up. Maybe it was because it wasn’t too late yet and fans weren’t overly tired, but the energy he created outmatched any of the other artists. He later dropped his Jack U “Take You There” remix, a personal favorite and solidified that he knows what he’s doing behind a booth. Hey may not be able to “edit your soul” but sure as hell can edit which artist you leave with as a favorite.
