Since its inception, Moombahton has seen a lot of different forms as it’s taken influence from multiple genres, but this release by Dillon Francis takes the genre further than it has ever been before.
Traditionally, Moombahton is a marriage between Dutch House and Reggaeton, but that is not where the genre ends. Sub-genres Moombahcore and Moombahsoul are examples of how this mid-tempo music is really only defined by its rhythmic structure, and even that is a flexible element in its tracks. In his remix of Passion Pit’s “Carried Away,” Dillon Francis proves this to be true once again as he blends many elements into a unique and complete whole.
As the song begins, we hear elements of the original songs set to a standard 113BPM 4×4 rhythm, and as the song breaks, in come those sliced-and-diced vocal chops and euphoric, airy synths that we have all come to love from Dillon Francis.
At first, this seems like it will be a “standard” DF song, falling among the ranks of his “Broken Hearts,” “Circles,” and “Hits Me Like A Rock” remixes, but as the song reaches the end of the build, some deep & throaty synths begin to filter in and it becomes clear that this will, in fact, be a special track. The drop explodes with with a bouncy, funky melody that has strong Acid House influence and the result is a surprising pleasure to listen to.
While I’ve heard a track or two in this genre paying homage to Acid House, never before have it’s elements been so well-matched with Moombahton. This release is an exciting moment for Moombah, as we can now expect this Acid-y sub-genre to gain some momentum and begin to make an impact on the scene. No word on a release date yet, but you can expect this to be a huge track throughout the spring leading into festival season.

Great commentary, always nice to get a thousand-foot view of the genre.
