I was studying for an exam of some sort when I first caught wind of the Never Knew EP by Purple Velvet, I quickly put down my pen, closed my book and proceeded to enjoy the sweet sounds traveling through my headphones. Purple Velvet was a duo made up of Chris James and Lee Dearn. Though now disbanded, at the time of this EP these two very talented producers combined their skills and constructed a wonderful sound. Never Knew EP was released around 3 years ago on UK based label Strucci Manucci.
My track of choice has to be “Always” not only because it is filled with a dance-inducing groove, but also because it is executed superbly. The track starts off immediately with dynamic drums and periodic high hats. We’re then introduced to a soulful voice that chants “Always moving” indicating that the further you immerse yourself into this song, the more enhanced your listening experience becomes. “Always” is deep, and it’s fun. Don’t be surprised if you find your hands waving thoughtlessly above your head– It’s your body telling you that it likes the song. So, do right by your body, put the track on repeat, and listen to it endlessly. Have I steered you wrong yet?
Although we probably won’t hear from Purple Velvet again, we can enjoy the music they left behind and explore the music that James and Dearn will individually be releasing in the future. Most things in life are temporary, but fortunately for us, music is eternal.
