“What’s this?” the young boy asked as he holds up a dusty record. Taking it from his hand his companion whispered ,”Watch this,” and with one breath she blows powerfully, clearing away the dust and revealing the shiny plate lined with thin rings. Walking towards her grandfather’s old turntable, she strategically placed the needle on the record and Chapeau Rouge, an album by french producer Folamour, began to fill the room. The cluster of dust that had been lingering in the air was now dancing, following the movements of the children as they spun and swung across the room.
Chapeau Rouge carries a story, different to all that experience it, but a story nonetheless. Throughout time this story changes but the substance of it stays the same. Full of soul and produced with love, Folamour’s Chapeau Rouge is an album that will go down in history for being eclectic and ridiculously well constructed. Beginning with the first track “Lost Between Friendly Fires,” Folamour immediately showcases his production skills as well as his ability to combine eclectic sounds to create harmonious tracks. The best part about this album is that no track sounds the same, instead each tells its own story and somehow prepares you for the song to come – a quality that is not so easily found in most albums, but ever-present in Chapeau Rouge.
Released on German label Fauxpas Musik in August of 2015, Chapeau Rouge was a product of Bruno Boumendil (better known as Folamour) in anticipation for a warm and fiery summer. The design of the album cover displays that hope by combining a bright, almost blinding yellow contrasted with fiery red lettering. The physical press of the vinyl is even better because it was “pressed on sunny yellow wax including a sunset-red innner sleeve,” states the description Fauxpas Musik posted for Chapeau Rouge. This is a limited edition press that is fundamental in any record collection, but alas, they’re hard to come by and if you do so happen to find a copy it’ll cost you a pretty penny.
“It ended…” said the young boy as he mourns the loss of the experience. The girl, without saying a word, walked over to the record player and effortlessly flips the disc. Side B begins to play and the atmosphere was just as it was. A new musical encounter then took place.
